Weird brightness problem

I've noticed something weird, and slightly annoying. If i'm messing with my phone and it starts to go dim right before it locks, if i hit the screen it will only brighten back up part way sometimes. And then in the middle of whatever i'm doing, it suddenly goes back to the full brightness. (Or at least how high i have it set to) Anyone else having this problem. My friend's does the same thing.

It is the auto-brightness. It is supposed to dim before locking. It will get brighter if it senses more light,

If this feature annoys you and you want full brightness (and wasted battery) then you can change the brightness settings in the phone and stop the auto.

I know it's supposed to dim before it locks. That isn't what i meant as the problem. After it dims, if i touch it again before it locks, it doesn't go back to my brightness setting. It only partially brightens, then at a random time, it will go back to my brightness setting. It just seems kind of weird.
