So I was at a party last night and I went to take a picture of my friends with my iPhone... when suddenly I made it zoom in somehow. Performance was sluggish, but the camera was actually zoomed in. It looked like it was at either 2x or 4x.

I have no idea how I did this, but has it happened to anyone else?

nope

Haha Yeah, that is possible... but I'm serious! I made sure to stay in the same place when restarting the Camera app and it went back to normal.

It would be cool for apple to add the pinch feature to the camera in terms of zooming in and out just like a picture. Maybe that is possible and you did that? I don't have an iPhone :(

i was drunk a few weeks ago and dropped my iphone then the next day when i woke up the camera was acting odd...the colors were oddly saturated and made everything look like a cartoon kind of like the posterize filter on photoshop...I got mine replaced but i guess the moral of the story here is keep the iphone in your pocket while drinking

Bro I been pinching, double tapping, sliding, even talking to my iphone for the past 5 minutes
Nothing happened, no zoom :D

I wasn't imagining things. It really zoomed in. And like I said, performance even took a hit because of the low light conditions. Trust me, it freaked me out!

If you say so :)
Is it even possible if the camera thats preinstalled not to have zoon capabilities but do a software update zoom?

Even if it did do a digital zoom, I wouldn't care. Digital zoom doesn't result in any additional picture information being gathered by the camera. All it does is crop and enlarge a smaller area of the CMOS active area and perform a simple pixel interpolation (or other smoothing operation) to simulate a zoomed in image. It's nothing you can't do in Photoshop.

Are you sure it wasnt just the apeture letting in more light? Sometimes Ill hold mine up and the screen is dark, then it will get progressively brighter as more light comes into the lense.

NO ONE else has ever seen it zoom, I doubt you have some super special one of a kind edition. Probably just thought you saw something that you really didnt see.

it doesn't zoom though you clearly do ;)

and even if it did it would be useless because it wouldn't be anything but cropping the available image data digitally.

Believe it or not, I can support the OP's claim. I was playing around and taking pics with my iPhone and it did do some sort of zoom randomly. Upon taking a picture though, it was captured at normal size (no zoom) and then everything returned back to normal. It was a little awkward but i just ignored it, and it hasn't happened again yet!

if you move the camera fairly rapidly it can sometimes look like it is zooming in and out.

You get the same effect by holding it and walking =D

Well, maybe I'm wrong here, but wouldn't a zoom feature be only digital and not optical and thus not desirable. A digital zoom can be done in post-production/ spreading the fingers on the iPhone.

I'd be more than happy with a 2-4x digital zoom.

Is it wonderful? no but it would be nice.

or maybe he just meant tool and wanted to avoid the banhammer.

i agree, don't see the point of digital zoom. my canon dslr doesn't have it. its called cropping in photoshop if you really need to.

that being said, some photobooth-esque filters and video distortions would be fun...just for kicks. that feature alone used to keep my ex occupied for hours, lol.
