After installing the 8.5 update on my AW4, I've noticed some weird behavior when charging. I put the watch on the charger, and it will charge without issue, however once the battery hits 100% the watch will start disconnecting and reconnecting itself from the charger so to speak.

The day after updating the watch, I woke up in the middle of the night and while I was laying there I heard the charging "ding" sound from my AW and the screen lit up with the charging animation for a second followed by the clock face for a second and then the lock screen. I though it was odd but ignored it. A minute or two later, it did it again. A few minutes later, it happens again. I took the watch off the charger and went back to sleep. It happens every time the charge hits 100% now following the 8.5 update. I have restarted the watch several times to no avail. The watch works fine in every other aspect and charges fine- just this wonkiness when it hits a full charge.

Anyone seen anything like this before?

Yes. I have the exact same issue on my AW6. I have had this on both of my multi-charging stations and have done the same as you. I have not tried it with the Apple cord yet, but find it odd that it was not happening prior to 8.5 on any of them.

Glad I’m not alone. I am also using a third party multi-charging station. I haven’t yet tried the Apple official charger, but I will give it a try later and report back. I didn’t have this issue before, and my wife’s watch which hasn’t been updated yet is not doing this on the same charging station. Just started out of the blue with 8.5.

Please tell us which charging stations are giving you these problems.
Mine is a cheapo one from Amazon- some Chinese no namer but I’ve had it for about 2 years and it’s worked fine for both my iPhone (both XS and 12 Pro) and AW4 up to this point. My wife has the same one on her nightstand and has had the same results.

Mine are the same - I don’t want to say cheap but both are off Amazon. I too have had no issues with either of them for the better part of 2-3 years now. And both charge the phones and AirPods without any issues, but now present this Watch bug.

It seems odd that there many having issues - whether it’s the lack of high speed charging or this issue “ding” issue - since watchOS 8.5 was released.

That was my thought too; I saw the thread about the lack of high speed charging on the Belkins as well as our issue- clearly something related to charging was changed in 8.5.

One of the thoughts I had on “our” issue is that it may be related to the function that stops charging/sets trickle charge mode once the battery hits 100%. Almost like it stops charging because it’s full, but then recognizes a few mins later that it’s on the charger so it starts charging again but it’s full so it stops and then gets stuck in that loop.

I don't want to speak too soon, but I believe the 8.5.1 update released today might have fixed this issue for me! I put the watch on the charger to install the update a few hours ago and left it there. It's been at 100% for about 2 hours now and while I haven't been sitting next to it watching it like a hawk (charger is on my bedroom nightstand) I've checked in on it a few times and so far I haven't seen it happen. I'll post back if I see any change in that.

I have an AW5. No problems using a 3party charging station until this last update. My iphone and airpods charge fine. When I put my watch on, first goes to nightstand mode then switches between nightstand mode, current watch face and Security screen. I am not touching the stand in any way. Does it randomly! Did not do this before. Grrrr....this is so irritating. Does it even if I have an alarm set. I have checked everything imaginable on my watch. Help all you experts out there!

Mine still does this after the incremental update. On all of the chargers except for the apple wire. My solution was to use the mute on the control pannel on the watch and I can charge it overnight without hearing the constant ding. That or use the apple cord when I am working at the desk.

Same here- 8.5.1 did not fix it as I initially thought it might have. Muting it before bed has been my solve to this too.
