So I've noticed this for the last couple of days and haven't been able to find anyone anywhere on the internet that has a matching story. Maybe someone can help me:

Every now and then, when I double click my home button to open the multitasking bar at the bottom, it only registers a single click. So if I'm on a screen other than home, I double click, and it takes me to home. Here's where it gets weird though. Sometimes it's like it saves the extra click so the next time I single click, it takes it as two clicks.

This is such an annoying issue. I have a feeling (and I hope) that it's software related. I have already had to make several exchanges, and if this ended up being a hardware problem, I would be very angry. I know Apple would take care of it, but I'm really sick of going back to the Apple store.

Anyone had this problem or something similar?

Bumping this--I found this thread in the Apple support forums:

Most of these people are having the exact same issue I'm having--sometimes a single home button click pulls up the multi tasking menu and sometimes a double click registers as a single click. Even weirder, sometimes when I single click nothing happens, but then I single click again and it takes both clicks. So if I'm in an app, single click to get to home screen, nothing happens, single click again and I end up in the search screen. That makes me think that this is a software issue, since the phone is registering the click but doesn't respond to it right away. But in the back of my head I'm thinking this is a hardware issue that entitles me to a replacement.

This is such a frustrating problem. Restoring the phone as a new phone and NOT using my old backups to put all my stuff back on it has not fixed the problem. In fact, when I did restore it as a new phone, the problem happened right away before I even put anything back on it.

Has anyone experienced this, and more importantly, has anyone figured out a way to fix it? It seems to happen usually right after waking up from sleep or right after quitting an app. I have a Genius Bar appointment on Thursday morning, but I'm not looking forward to it. I know I won't be able to reproduce it while I'm there, because that's how it always is. And if you don't count the one I broke and had to pay to replace, this will be my 4th replacement. My first one had wi fi problems, second one had a dead pixel, third one had cosmetic damage right out of the refurb box that I eventually just couldn't live with and had to raise a stink to have replaced.

This is the first Apple product I've ever owned and I'm getting very frustrated. Every trip to the Genius Bar results in me getting an iPhone with a whole new set of problems. Blech.

Add me to the list of affected iPhone 4 owners. My home button started acting up a few weeks ago and it's bothering me more and more as time goes on.

This confused home button problem combined with the latest Airport Extreme Base Station firmware update killing my WiFi performance has me questioning the whole "it just works" mantra I've been spouting since becoming an Apple convert a few years ago. :-/
