This comes with every PDF I have downloaded regardless of the source. The red button doesn't work, the yellow one does shrink it into the dock, and there is no green. I cannot get rid of it by dragging it to the trash either. Restarting removes them but is there an easier way? And what are they?:

Does anyone else ever have this happen or have any idea what it is? It may very likely be something simple that my "newness" to OSX is responsible for.

No matter if I download PDFs from a website, email etc these windows pop up along with the download and will not leave unless I restart. I can minimize them so they aren't a real bother I just don't know what they are. They say "opening" but they remain like that...frozen with nothing in the window..even after the PDF is closed or gone.

    download onyx from apple's website

    install it

click cleaning , select internet tab

    check everything and execute,

this will empty all your settings and clean out all the cache.

this should fix your issue, if not , post back and i will give you steps on reinstalling the pdf plugin.

    ok,

make sure you repair your disk permissions under disk utility to make sure its not somthing like a permission issue on the plug in,

are you using safari or firefox?

Safari - click safari menu , click reset safari.

Also, check your /Library/Internet Plugins folder and see if you have Adobe Reader plugin's. If you do and you don't have Reader installed dump the plugins in the trash and restart safari,

Still happening after following all applicable advice above. Posted before I read the above post. I had it set to "always ask"...I am not sure what you mean by deleting it as I only see the option to change actions not delete.

my bad, this has to be removed manually,

set it to open in preview by default (this will also download it)

this should tell you whether or not it is preview or firefox.

Yeah it doesn't happen with Preview selected as a default....only when choosing "save file" when set to "always ask"...strange.

you should run your weekly and monthly maintenece scripts,

that shouldn't happen if you have it "always ask"

    but it works now correct?

By works if you mean when set to "open with Preview" as default it doesn't leave the extra bit yes. But when set to "always ask" if I select "save this file" it still does it...if I choose "open with preview it doesnt".

I mean the window I posted a pic of in the OP. It comes up when choosing to save the file behind the "downloading" progress bar and stays there. Nothing every appears IN the window and the title bar always says "Opening such and such PDF" even when the PDF is not being accessed or even deleted. Only button that works is yellow to minimize it to the dock. Can't drag it to the trash or right click on it. It goes away with a restart but otherwise they would just pile up if I downloaded multiple pdfs.
