Last week my macbook pro froze without warning. After forcing a restart it looked like this:
p10132512.jpg

The menu bar is missing and all letters have been replaced by a square with an A in it. It almost doesn't respond to anything you do and if it does it's very slowly or with an error message like the one pictured.

I've tried reinstalling 10.6, but it won't let me, claiming there are files missing (which is odd since they should be taken from the install CD..) and I've scoured the internet for any mention of a similar error but I've found nothing.

Anyone able to help me here?

You probably have corrupt fonts. Also, you can't just move Fonts, as the system will still find them after you've moved them. You have to get rid of them or change the permissions to 700 so that you can't access to folder.
