i just moved, so my 1.8ghz imac g5 hasnt been on the internet for about 2 months now. I turn it on yesterday, everythings fine, today i do software update, and it finds updates for a bunch of programs , even mac osx, the 10.4.8 upgrade, so im like, cool . I turn everything back on, and have issues.

1. in the upper right, my wireless signal isnt even there, and says im not on the internet, so i do the system diagnostics, and i find my network and im online, but my signal still doesnt show up, and each time i get online, i have to do that same task.

2. my computer randomly shuts off... yes, i dont know what the update is for, but now my computer shuts off randomly.

someone please help me, or whats going on.. thanks

i think my computer may have downloaded the intel version of the update? i dono , someone please help!

It's highly unlikely it downloaded and installed the intel version of the 10.4.8 update.

The first thing you should do is go to the Apple website and download the 10.4.8 Combo Update (PPC) and reinstall it. After that, Repair Permissions. Then test again.

For the connection signal, do you mean a wireless connection? If so, under System Preferences, there should be a setting somewhere that says something to the effect of "Show Airport status on the menu bar" (I believe so, anyway...I'm sadly not on my Mac right now).

Same exact problem!!!

Mine does exactly the same thing and I have reinstalled the update over and over again. I have to add here that I am infact a systems engineer and do "sort" of know what I am doing but for some reason I think the new update to 10.4.8 has power issues with the G5 iMacs. Any else seen this?

Ok here it goes...

I am more than qualified to troubleshoot any problems with computers and this is what I have come up with on this problem simply by using a little common sense. When my iMac G5 2ghz is running 10.4 it runs like a charm without a single shutdown or any problems with the airport. The second I updgrade to either 10.4.6 or 10.4.7 or 10.4.8 I begin to get problems with the machine shutting down and problems with the machine slowing right down with a direct connection to the airport being the problem as when I disconnect the airport(turn off) the slowness goes away and everything runs fine...EXCEPT for the powering down as it is still there. So my common sense tells me that this is infact NOT a hardware issue because if it were then I would have the same issues with 10.4 but I don't so I believe this to be nothing more than an issue with the updates somehow. I know some will disagree but in my case this would appear to be the issue as I have reloaded mulitiple times multiple versions of OSX and this is what I have come up with cause everytime I go back to 10.4 it is all fine.
So sit on that for awhile while I wait for Apple to address this issue finally instead of replacing mainboards and PSU when the real problem lies in their OS updates.

PS: for the record my close friend has had his mainboard replaced 3 times and he still has the problems and they only return when he downloads the updates beyond 10.4.

PSS: why not just stay with 10.4 you ask??? Well I need the updates for sw like Aperture to run. ;)
