Hi all - I have a very strange scratch(?) on my iPhone. It's just above and to the right of the earpiece. It looks like the sort of line you could draw with an etch-a-sketch! It's only developed in the past week or so.

The surface of the glass isn't scratched at all - running my fingernail over it is smooth and flawless, so it must be under the glass - but how?! I haven't dropped my iPhone recently, nor has it been in a pocket containing keys or any other items.

I've attached a photo of it, so I'd really appreciate to hear what you all think it could be! Also, do you reckon it's grounds for a replacement from O2?

Do you use a case or anything on it?

I doubt O2 will replace it because of cosmetic damage. Plus its the users doing, not the phones.

Plastic is on the back, glass is on the front, its clearly a scratch on the glass

No, I don't use a case, I'm by no means rough with it, though.I also don't see how it can be "user damage" when the mark is under the glass. To me it looks like a manufacturing defect that has taken a while to mature.

I have no idea. It's definitely not on the surface though. It doesn't rub off, there's no marking on the glass, or indentations to indicate it has been scratched.

Just got back from the O2 store, they were essentially useless. The guy behind the counter first tried to tell me that it was part of the sensors(!). When I insisted it definitely wasn't, he took it out the back. When he came back he announced that as it's not affecting the performance of the phone then they can't replace it. Suggested I speak to Apple directly.

Has anyone had any experience with returning an iPhone to Apple over the phone? My nearest Apple store is a 2 hour drive away, so it's not exactly convenient to do it that way.

Perhaps it's the adhesive that attaches the glass letting go?

I'd take to an Apple store mate, you should have a 1yr Apple Warranty.

Yeah, I called Apple earlier and explained the problem. They were very apologetic and had never heard of the problem before!

Going to pop into an Apple store next weekend. Good excuse to spend more money too!

My thought exactly! It looks like you have a developing air bubble under the glass where it is separating.

I assume by now and the lack of a huge ranting post containing about profanity to put the angry german kid to shame, that he got a suitable replacement.

I had the same problem. I returned mine today. They were super nice about the whole thing. Took a total of 15 minutes-
Scallywag- Why not return it? It's always nice to have something new! :) Plus, the issue is totally a plausible reason to return something. What if it just gets worse?

He gave me one out of a white box- I suppose this means it was refurbished. He basically said, however, "Here's your new iPhone." So. I don't know; still better than having one that looks like someone took a machete to it-

Ok mine has a similar scratch underneath the glass. And I would like to return it. The only thing is the scratch is on the bottom right side of the screen and I have dropped my phone and it hit the concrete on the top left of the plastic. There is a little chunk/chip on the white plastic. Do you think I could still get a replacement? Or will they deem it "user damage?"
