What is the weird symbol with the phone with the dots under it next to the alarm? It randomly came up

Now for a worse question...

What is TTY? I've always seen that option, but never bothered to learn about it.
 
Just a funny addition to this thread:
Several months ago, my mom had the TTY icon appear on her iPhone. So she asked me about it. I turned it off for her and explained that it was something to help deaf people talk on phones or whatever. She said ''does my phone think I'm deaf because I'm always turning the volume up during calls?" I thought it was pretty funny!

This appeared on my phone too...but thanks to joining this forum I have found your info helpful, and removed the symbol i inadvertantly put on!:eek:
