you have TTY inadvertently turned on. Turn it off and the icon will go away.

I'm not sure how people are inadvertently turning that on. Anyway, glad to help.

That's on my mom's iPhone too. It randomly appears and disappears. I don't know why that happens.

    Now for a worse question...

What is TTY? I've always seen that option, but never bothered to learn about it.

Hmmm ... maybe it appears when you call a TTY-equipped number? Like a government office or something?

Just a funny addition to this thread:
Several months ago, my mom had the TTY icon appear on her iPhone. So she asked me about it. I turned it off for her and explained that it was something to help deaf people talk on phones or whatever. She said ''does my phone think I'm deaf because I'm always turning the volume up during calls?" I thought it was pretty funny!
