My city and the city I'm transferring to after I'm done with community college here doesn't have AT&T LTE. It has... "4G" but not LTE... Sigh. Dang it.

You're going to forego the new iPhone because AT&T doesn't have LTE in your area yet? Is that the only reason not to get it, assuming you initially wanted it?
They do but I got my family out of Sprint this year... I can't do that to them again. It's whatever really.
Cool story. HSPA+ is still plenty fast. Plus if you do a two year contract, chances are you'll get LTE eventually. I don't have it and I'm surviving.

Yes, but I believe the 5 has the capability to do faster HSPA+
The screen, speed and potential for LTE when I travel was enough for me to jump from the 4S to the 5. No regrets.
My 4S is being inconsistent with my data though... Like it used to be faster and now it's really bumpy. The iPhone 5 wasn't like that.
reason why I would still get it. you out of a contract.. do it. if they roll out LTE next year. you good to go.. next year. probably get some 5S with small upgrades.. but the year after? big changes.. and now you stuck with the S ones and not the overhaul ones.

And yes, the 4S does "4G" (HSPA+).
Apple doesn't indicate the 4S has HSPA+. Only the iphone 5.

I don't know why I"m bothering to reply to this thread but anyway...
I don't have LTE in my town yet either but "4G" gives me 3-6mb which isn't too horrible. LTE will come soon enough and I'm not going to miss this great phone while I wait for local LTE.
Besides.. don't you travel? Many places have it.

Obviously. He was saying HSPA+ is quick but it's really not when compared to what the phone can actually do on LTE.
