today my iPhone fell on comcrete, it had the Apple leather case but the case didn’t do much from protecting the back camera, it cracked, now I have a Genius Bar appointment next Monday, I have the AppleCare, they told me they may have to replace the whole phone because it’s such a new phone they might not be able to repair the rear camera because the crack happened inside the lens?
I don’t know...

I am bummed, but even more so I am disappointed at Apple leather case, I remember my spigen case on the older iPhone it was a tank and it had more protection around the camera area.

I love the Apple case, but after this? I’ll probably just go third party case, plus they are way cheaper too...

Damn that sucks! I guess good thing you have AppleCare for these situations. First day I got my Max I dropped it on my bed frame and onto my wood floors and luckily I only got a couple scratches.

The camera and that back glasswork pretty much means you are getting a replacement. Good news is it's probably too early for those white box refurbs. so it will probably be retail product. but it's still a roll of the dice on what sort of factory condition it will be in.

They have white box replacements day one.

This is my first time ever damaging an iPhone since the iPhone 3G, I don’t know about you guys but it was depressing, The fall wasn’t that big either, I guess **** happens and gotta move on, but yeah, I don’t know how they gonna fix the inside glass, also with water protection I don’t know how this whole thing plays out.

Lesson learned, time for a new case that has more protection around the camera, I’ve never bought an Apple case because I thought they didn’t have much protection, I guess I kinda pay the price this time around...

Are these refurb because they were returned or they may have some type of defect?

No they aren’t refurbs. They just have a supply of white box devices they have for replacements.

Dont feel too bad. The other day I was walking with my phone in left hand, and mcdonalds to go bag in right hand. The bag almost fell and I dropped my phone to save the damn bag. Broke the screen. Got a new phone with AC+ since no screen repairs yet.

They aren’t refurbs for the time being only. In some 5 months time they surely will.

Yeah OP the leather case provides zero protection because it doesn’t flex enough to protect the phone itself from flexing upon impact (and then breaking the screen). Since it’s essentially a hard case on the inside.

It’s just phones without any accessories packaged.

Unlucky there.

Seems like a good thread to give my example of a work colleague who has the X in an Apple leather case, who dropped it from ~3m before it hit some ironwork & fell on tiles...no cracks. I was surprised myself, as I saw it flipping in the air & making contact with a solid object before landing.

Just luck of the draw with drops, with or without cases. & as your case gets thicker, you need less luck..

apples leather cases are not intended for drop protection. Tbey’re more for scratch protection and grip
What makes it worse is the new iPhones are top heavy. Hold them tight in hand

Just real unlucky. No case is a guarantee against damage. My friend forgot his phone was in his lap when he got out of his pickup truck the phone fell about 4 feet to the concrete and the screen shattered and he was using one of the heavy duty Otterbox cases.

Sometimes physics is cruel!

It happens. As you can read from other members in this thread, there are examples of those freak accidents where phones land on a certain angle and depending on the surface type, the results are not always favorable. AppleCare is always beneficial in situations like this.

The camera could have hit an edge of the concrete or something raised up enough where the case didn't protect it. Like others said, cases help but are not bulletproof. For example. Wife dropped her 7 with a speck case with a pretty high drop height rating(I think 8') from below her waist onto a tile floor, no physical damage at all. That phone never worked again, screen was dead. Phone was on but couldn't type the passcode to back it up on the computer before replacing it. Internal damage of some sort..She lost alot of photos but most other stuff was backed up to icloud.

This feels like another one of those ”It wasn’t my fault, must be poor design” threads.

The thread title implies the camera cracked of its own accord, but the reality is the OP dropped it an damaged it.

That’s ridiculous. The OP specifically said he dropped it. Now expecting a thing leather case to protect a protruding camera when hitting concrete might be a bit presumptuous, but the title wasn’t intended to mislead. If that were the case, the text wouldn’t be so upfront.
