Well it's our sample size. Where's your empirical evidence to the contrary? :)

"Our" as in Macrumors forum members? If so, the sample size and poll results still mean nothing. There are over 800,000 registered users. Take a look at the "iPad Air Screen Defect" thread with over 1,000 replies and you will find...... Why I am wasting my time arguing. Bye.

Like my prior iPads (wife, children etc), my rMini has been perfect. I'm extremely happy with it and the display.

These numbers are way too high!!

It is almost a 1/4 of iPads have been returned, extremely unacceptable for such a premium price paid.

I am sure those numbers are unacceptable to apple!

Consider the sampled population. Most MR members it appears to be a bit more picky on the screen and most people come to a forum to complain about a product so its quite possible that while on 25% are returned that number is skewed and not indicative of actual results.

The bottom line 100 respondents is too small to derive any sort of trend when the volume of sales is in the millions

I should add, our iPad 2 has been fine (great up to this day) but my previous non-retina mini did have dust under the screen not long after I got it.

I think I had a legitimate reason to return my Air.
There was a lot of freezing or frequently no response when I touched a link, and nothing appeared when I typed. During these times I could not scroll with one finger. Two fingers worked clumsily.

I did have quite a few Safari windows open, but this never happened on my old mini, with same kind of use on it all of last year. On the Air, this behaviour started happening about 2 weeks after receiving it.

I could bring it back to normal by a hard restart, but I really don't want to be slowed down by doing that all the time.
It also got quite warm, unlike my old mini, which was worrisome together with what was happening.

And after reading all the raves about Notability, I got the app, and it is slow to open, which was really disappointing because it’s a notepad - something that needs to open quickly to get ideas, references, and such down and organized. I had Bamboo notebook on my mini, and it always opened in a flash.

(I'm waiting on the mail for a replacement, plus I ordered a ret. mini to compare).

Yeah, that seems legitimate to me. But I'm talking more about the people with the problem of my iPad, the yellow tint. I didn't notice it in the beginning, but then I saw people on here complaining about it and then I noticed it on mine. It's not terrible, but it's not preferred. And it's definitely not worth returning the iPad for, in my opinion. It still works 100% perfectly. Instead of worrying what color the screen is, I'm going to enjoy my iPad.

When you know that there's units out there with even white tints, do you think it's fair that you got one of the bad ones?

We all pay the same, so we're entitled to the same quality.

I returned the first ipad mini with retina display because of a few dead pixels on the screen .. The 2nd one is doing alright :D

I would've been content with my Retina Mini but it had stuck pixels. So it's going back. Not really worried about image retention or any of the other things being mentioned in the forum.

Obtained my rMini LTE just before Thanksgiving. Haven't seen any issues with it. Screen appears to be uniform and meets my needs.

sort of

I bought an Air which is fine. I then bought a rMini which seemed 'ok' but retuned it for other reasons. Regretting this rash move :D , i bought another and noticed immediately it actually had a better screen than the first one.

This difference here, which is perhaps worth mentioning, is that I would of enjoyed the first rMini and not gone back over and over again for exchanges, being a grown up. :)

YMMV

Being a grown up myself, I believe that quality is important and won't waste my money on or be satisfied with a less than quality product. I don't return for buyer's remorse or buy something just to try it, but if I buy a product and it isn't up to par there is no way I'm going to just keep it and be happy. I wonder about those who are so easily satisfied and how they handle other areas in their life, such as job performance.

----------

Returned 3 iPad Airs with yellow screens, the 4th that I kept has a great screen.
Lucked out with the rMini and got a great screen first try.

This is a very personal statement. And I ask you, would you reject Cindy Crawford because of her mole?

For some it isn't about perfection but satisfaction, which is precisely why I used the word.

Unfortunately there is no such thing as a perfect product when you are talking about the assembly line production

But as this poll demonstrates either:

1) At least 52%* of all iPads are defective. That is to say tens of millions of iPads are defective.

2) 23% of the members in this forum have a significantly higher standards than the majority.

As for myself, if I would not go through 4 products, if I did not find the first or second item acceptable I would move on.

Getting 6+ "defective" products and still continuing for the search for a perfect one, cannot be called anything except fanaticism.

Would you still keep going to Ford to replace your car for the third time, hoping to find one that would drive straight line and not swerve erratically?

* An intentionally conservative estimate.

Having said that, I want to make it clear that in no way do I suggest that anyone hang on to a device they are not happy with.

I don't require perfection, but I will return products that are unsatisfactory to me as often as I determine it to be reasonable in my opinion. I was responding to the smart a remark from the poster who claimed he would have kept his first ipad because he was a "grown up". If you don't think it is reasonable to return 3 unsatisfactory products that's your choice.

But as this poll demonstrates either:
1) At least 52%* of all iPads [..]
2) 23% of the members in this forum [...]

This poll only reflects the numbers related to the people who responded.

It's meaningless in terms of conclusions about "all ipads" or "members in this forum" because
  1. Only the 125 forum members who choose to respond to the poll are counted, not the many thousands of forum members who didn't.
  2. None of the millions of ipad owners who aren't on MacRumors are counted.
So you can certainly discuss the percentages of the 125 people who bothered to respond to the poll, but those numbers are essentially useless. The sampling methodology is inherently flawed and cannot be assumed to be a statistically valid sample.

Well, in less than a week 131 people voted, and 23% did not get a flawless unit after several replacement. That is unusual. Something is definitely wrong with iPad Air, iPhone 5s and rMini.

Something is going wrong with Apple. Or with Foxconn who knows what's going on there.
These latest Apple products releases do not look like previous releases. Certainly not.
1% at the max, of unsatisfied or usual nitpickers, would be absolutely normal. But not 23%.

Only thing that remains, they after-sale good support. Wonder how long it will last though.

1st generation ipad:
Screen was perfect.

2nd generation ipad:
Screen had a yellow tint when compared to my ipad 1, had to exchange it twice before I got one that was on par with the 1st.

3rd generation ipad:
Was a gift from my employer had a minor yellow tint but the biggest issue was the screen was much darker than my ipad 2 even at full brightness. But I had to live with it and got used to it after awhile.

Skipped 4th generation

5th generation (air):
Bought this one from microcenter and not only did it have a yellow tint but the colors and brightness were worse than the ipad 3. Exchanged it 3 times and every one had the same issue. So I took the 4th one to the apple store and showed them the difference between the 3 and air. The tech said that since I bought the 128 model that more than likely they had all been from the same batch that micro center had initially received.

They exchanged it out with one of there "unboxed replacement versions" the screen on this one is much brighter/perfect colors/ and no yellow tint.

This isn't an issue with just apple, I went through pretty much the same thing with my samsung t.v. When your grabbing parts from all over the place there are going to be uniformity issues but with demand so high they don't really have a choice and these screens are not easy to mass produce.....just don't settle for something your not happy with.
