Just returned the Scorpio

I returned the Scorpio last night and got the Momentus. Both of the techs I spoke with at Best Buy said the Scorpio had many more returns than the Momentus. My Scorpio worked great for the first couple of weeks then started having read/write issues until the Mac stopped recognizing after about 3.5 weeks. I was 4 days short of having the drive for one month when I returned it.

My vote: Momentus (but I've had it installed less than 24 hours)

i am in the same boat an i am wondering which is better for same reasons. 7200.4 500 or blue 500

by the way to the guy above which momentus is it the 5400.6 or 7200.4 and is it the blue or black?

Just to add, after careful consideration, I've gone for the Seagate momentus 5400.6 (5400rpm) 500GB over the Momentus 7200 rpm variant & WD Scorpio 5400rpm blue. Have 2 Momentus drives running in 2 other notebooks, so far had no problems. Looking at reviews, no significant difference between the WD and Seagate 5400rpm drives plus with the problems reported by some users of the WD drive, I went for the latter.

Regarding 7200rpm drives, as apple doesnt offer the choice when configuring, is it really a wise choice? Noise, vibration, generated heat, battery life etc.

I think that the reason that they only sell 5400 RPM drives as a BTO with lower end machines is to try to get people to buy a higher-end computer. I'm sure Apple would love you to buy a 2.66 or 2.8 GHz 15" MBP with a 7200 RPM HD over an entry level 13" with a 7200 RPM HD, for example.

I don't have an opinion, but I just want to remind people who post info about failure rates to consider also the initial sample size. In other words, a store may say to you "We get about 4 WD's returned for every Seagate." This really doesn't mean anything unless you know how many of each the store sells to begin with. If the store sells 10 WD's for every Seagate, then all of a sudden that return rate doesn't look as bad for WD. Likewise, if someone says "When a HD at work fails, it's usually a WD," this also doesn't mean much if most of the HD's there are WD's to begin with. I'm not accusing anyone, just trying to keep things objective :D

For those of you who went with the Seagate 7200 Momentus, what are your observations as to heat, vibration, and effect on battery life? (And, if you have such observations, what model MBP are you using?)

Right now, it seems that most people are pleased with the drive they chose, which is good news for those making a decision now but doesn't really get to the heart of which drive is "better."

As many threads as there are touching on the OP's question, it's still very interesting to hear people's impressions of these drives.

I've had the 7200.4 500GB Momentus for around 2 1/2 weeks, and it's awesome. Compared to the stock 5400rpm drive, it's a substantial difference I'd say. Vibration is none, and quiet.

I think the vibration issues come from a bad user installation. Many people tend to overtighten things too much.

Battery life seems the same as before (I get around 5-6 hours).

That's really good to hear -- thanks. You could be right about over-tightening, especially if people over-tighten some screws and not others.

yeah thats has been the findings of a lot of other threads on hard drives including these hard drives.
