Westpac has become the last of Australia's big four banks to announce Apple Pay support for its customers. The country's oldest bank revealed on Tuesday that it had enabled the new service, following similar moves by ANZ, the Commonwealth Bank, and National Australia Bank.

"We are pleased to announce that Westpac customers can now use Apple Pay to make fast and secure payments. This comes at an important time for our customers, who are looking for an alternative to cash," Westpac Group chief executive of consumer David Lindberg said.

"We have seen a significant increase in customers using digital banking in recent weeks as more Australians stay at home. With the introduction of Apple Pay, it will now be even easier for customers to pay for goods and services in stores, via apps or online without the need for a card or wallet."
As noted by ZDNet, Westpac actually announced the adoption of Apple Pay across several of its financial services providers back in December, but regular Westpac customers were told they had to wait until June 2020.

Westpac's Apple Pay support includes compatibility with eftpos (electronic funds transfer at point of sale), the local payments scheme and national debit card system accepted across the country. The technology makes it possible for retailers to directly receive funds from a customer's bank account via their debit card through a secure Australian payment network.

Westpac was one of several banks that collectively tried to negotiate with Apple to gain access to the NFC chip within Apple's devices to allow their own payments services to work on iOS devices alongside Apple Pay.

The banks argued that access to the NFC chip in the iPhone would allow them to offer competing wallets, which would lead to increased competition and consumer choice in digital wallets and increased innovation and investment in digital wallets.

However, Apple does not allow third-party access to the NFC chip because of security concerns, and the company put pressure on the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) to deny the banks the right to negotiate a deal, which was the eventual outcome.

The banks involved in the dispute resisted implementing Apple Pay throughout the attempts at collective bargaining, although Apple Pay has been available in Australia for quite some time through partnerships with American Express and ANZ.

I'm guessing WBC's statistical analysis showed a continual eroding of their younger customers' business and research revealed it is mostly due to the uptake of Apple Watches and Apple Pay. Westpac would have decided that 50% of digital client transactions (15 cents) is better than zero. Westpac was the second biggest early adopter, after CBA, of self service phone banking back in the '80's. Amex was way ahead of the first bank - ANZ with the uptake of Apple Pay.

I want an  Card and momentarily become excited when I see the text, "Earn 3% cash back..." It will be interesting to see whether our banks try to fight Apple using the ACCC's irrelevant rules against the monolith American private enterprise or compete to have Apple as their partner.

Apple Card and Cash is still bound to US only.

Yeah but that's got nothing to do with the banks here that's entirely up to Apple if they decide to roll that out internationally or not.

The payment space in Australia is heavily regulated notably when it comes to Interchange fees which for the most part is where the money comes from to pay for those cashback schemes. I highly doubt the cashback feature in Australia will be that high outside purchases from Apple. If Apple chose to roll that product out here in Australia.

What took them so long?
4 big Australian banks lodged a case few years back to make Apple pay them for adoption of ApplePay. Because they are too big, you know, they wanted to double dip. Apple responded: "F off".

Oh god, sympathises for Westpac Apple users.
All 10 of them )

Presumably They weren't happy with paying Apple a cut of each transaction through Apple Pay you could probably read the ACCC submission by Westpac to figure out more.

When they announced back in December 2019 after rolling it out to other Westpac Group brands, I'm pretty sure they blamed it on outdated banking systems for the delay to Westpac's rollout to the Westpac brand itself.

Actually not all of the big four were involved ANZ did no such thing and was one of the 1st to roll out Apple Pay. This was three big four banks and a couple of very large credit unions notably one of those credit unions Heritage bank is now the largest hold out of Apple Pay support in Australia since the Westpac rollout.

Presumably, you moved to a bank that is definitely much better than Westpac and this other bank had more than just the added benefit of supporting Apple Pay.

All 10 of them )

Wouldn't that be nine after you closed your last account 😀

I tried to add my Westpac Visa credit card now and it said "Your Issue Does Not Yet Offer Support". I spoke to them and they said that Westpac Visa cards were not compatible with Apple Pay. Only Westpac Mastercards. Westpac Fail 🙄. Furious.

Yeah, and it's highly unlikely that they will support this considering they no longer issue new cards with Visa they're primarily now a Mastercard shop. I'm guessing support should've recommended you that they re-issue your card and send you a Mastercard out.

I thought westpac had ditched visa for MC?

anyway, my westpac MasterCard just activated Apple Pay through the iphone camera. Sweet. Joined my st George visa debit.
Then opened Apple Pay in the iPad settings to find the cards both loaded already, just needing the 3 digit code at the back to finish set up. The Apple Way is the Way.

Correct Westpac and the Westpac Group brands only support Apple Pay for the card schemes they're currently issuing cards with.

Yeah it's a bummer they didn't support instant provisioning.

The Apple Way is the Way.

Yeah, Provided the banks choose to implement all the functions of Apple Pay and don't just do the minimum.

It was always going to happen. I think it was just Westpac that didn't realise it. Did they not watch Apple wipe the floor with the music industry etc, etc? They're one step ahead of all these guys.
