Presumably They weren't happy with paying Apple a cut of each transaction through Apple Pay you could probably read the ACCC submission by Westpac to figure out more.
Not only that. All of the big four were also unhappy with apple’s policy of not giving 3rd parties access to the nfc chip on iphones for payments because it prevents them from making their own wallet apps available to apple users. They held out of apple pay and fought against that policy for years, but finally lost the fight and relented and now support apple pay for their customers.

I have also read over people’s comments, the amount of misinformation, fake news or armchair CEOs out there. It scares me that people are so confident in their opinions but so wrong at the same time.

The Australian banks are big, dumb and greedy. I dumped NAB on day one of Apple Pay and moved to ANZ who were the first to support in Australia. They got a lot of customers.

Not all the big four were involved with the ACCC dispute. ANZ did not participate in any public dispute with Apple but I guess that probably doesn't mean they may not of been unhappy about it internally. However, they were the first Australian bank to roll out Apple Pay.

there was actually a reason. The core banking system was not compatible with Apple Pay (the St George was, that’s why they rolled out first). They upgraded the core system and then rolled it out

Yep Westpac Group deemed it easier to integrate Apple Pay with their other brands first as it's well known here in Australia that Westpac's back and banking systems are some of the oldest in the country and it was easier for them to integrate Apple Pay into these other properties first back in December 2019.
