i put my ipod touch through a washing machine & the screen is dark like the brightness controls wont work, everything else is fine. What's wrong and what should i do!!!

Lol, yesterday I dropped my iPod Touch 2G in a puddle while it was raining (I was changing the song I was listening to when someone rammed into my arm and it fell). I pulled it out of the puddle and it was flickering violently with white lines going across the screen (not to mention that the touch screen wasn't working). Later in the day I found that it had restarted itself and was hanging at the apple logo. It refused to load. I let it sit overnight. Anyways, it's a day later now, and the backlight no longer function and the iPod still refuses to load. Luckily, the white strip is still white since i had headphones in at the time (and it was only in for about a second or two). I have a Warranty with Apple(1 year Warranty) and a warranty with Best Buy (2-3 year warranty). Which should I take it to and what should i say?

(Technically no proof of water damage since white strip is still white)

Let it dry out for a couple of days.

You may try putting it in a bag of uncooked rice for a few days. the rice absorbs the moisture.

Actually most electronics have more than one water damage indicator - one that can be seen easily by the user, and others hidden inside amongst the chips and wires. If one of the indicators inside the iPod (that you don't have access to) has changed colour, then you're screwed.

Yeah but if I go into Best Buy I can tell them it doesn't work properly as the backlight fails to function. If thats all I say, what are the chances of getting a replacement?

Oh, and I can always mention that it "could be an overheating issue because it was really hot when I unplugged it" as that seems to be a statement that usually ends in a replacement.

Not if you bring it to the Apple store, they're not going to open it up while you wait.

Here's a possible solution I've heard (I've never tried it, though.) ;) Place your soaked iPod on a paper towel, and set it near a dehumidifier. It's supposed to work best when in a confined space, like a closet. I mean, it sounds like it'd work for water spills, but Gatorade is too sticky and sugary. :(

i hope your **** works

i cant imagine living with out my ipod touch

one of my friends buddies had mine for a week cuz i was drunk and he give me his wack ass ipod touch with no music and a passcode lock i felt like HELL lol

i was going to do a complet restore to crack his code cuz i have so much hip hop on mines

needless to say i got it back

i can never in LIFE go back to listen to cd players lol

So... I had my iPod Touch in my backpack with a gatorade which I was sure I sealed up, but apparently I didn't.

So, a bit of Gatorade got on it, but it was only there for a couple of minutes.

At first, the screen turned black with white lines scratching across it, and now the Apple logo is frozen on it.........

Any suggestions?

ok i basically did the same thing except i dropped it in water...i tried blow drying it and it somewhat worked...i can unlock it but when i go to enter my password, i touch the numbers and other numbers get it....or it freezes and i cant restart it so i just let the battery run out...just let it dry out for a few days? or keep up with the blowdrying???? i dont know if i have a warranty

Go back and read the suggestions. The bag of rice worked for me.

be patient. it can take days or weeks depending on the soakage...

Haha wow. Thank you for sharing your intelligent, purposeful story.

Mine got soaked today. I managed to pour water all over myself while my Touch was in my pocket. At first it was all screwed up with dim screen, the flashing white lines and then the flickering apple logo but now it seems to have recovered.

All apart from the touchscreen that is. It's not accepting any input from me. The physical buttons are fine but thats not much use. I can't even unlock the damn thing.

:(

if its already wet then getting it more wet probably wont hurt it so i would say run water through it for a while to clean up the sugary residue.

Don't blow dry it! It's widely recognized that components + blow dryer= frazzled components! Leave it in a warm(ish but not too warm) airing cupboard. That should let the parts dry naturally but also speed up the process a little.

Ipod sweat issue...

I took my ipod touch for a run and like the super smart person I am, I tucked it inside my sports bra since I didn't have my arm band with me (the screen was directly on my skin) and went for a short run.

Well it was hot and I sweat a lot so when I got back the screen was wet and wouldn't unlock.

I connected it to my computer and restored it and it synced fine, but still wouldn't respond to touch,

I used a some of the air in a can to dry the inside and I got it to unlock but most of it still won't respond to my finger.

I now have it sitting in a bag of rice but I was wondering if it had to be completely covered in rice or sitting ontop of rice or what? I didn't want rice to get stuck in the headphone jack so i just set in ontop of the rice.

Any tips on rice placement? I'll let you know if it works.

I took a flashlight and looked at the indicator strip and it looks white. Is it supposed to be white? I've heard some posts say it is supposed to be black?

If I were you, I would've put the glass to the bra, not your skin. What a lucky iPod Touch though. ;) Anyway, I hope your iPod Touch will work and respond to your touch again! :D :apple:

There are several threads relating to your problem.

The main thing to do is let it dry out. This could take several days to a couple of weeks before it returns to normal, if that is possible. Putting it in a bag of dry rice as mentioned above is one of the best ways to dry it out.

Turning it on and trying to charge it may have done more damage than good.

Be patient.

The problem with this is that all alcohol that you drink has sugars and other stuff in it. I wouldn't recommend using ANY liquor store 'alcohol'. You need something organic that will replace the water and then dissipate. We used to use something called 'Blue Shower' that had a high Freon content and it would probably work however I don't know if they still make that stuff. It would take the moisture out of your fingers... Yeah, apparently they still do make it but it's called Blue Shower II... I can't imagine that the original was 'environment friendly'...

Whatever you use has to be 'hydrophobic' and also have a low vapor pressure so that it dissipates quickly. It's possible, depending on what the 'wet iPod sensor' substance is, that the proper chemical would 'drain' the water from it and reset it...

Back in the days we used a Freon liquid to clean the old reel to reel computer tape drives. That crap was NASTY! It stunk and would peal the skin off your fingers. Ahh, the good old days...

Something that is dielectric, hydrophobic and liquid that will dissipate without leaving any damaging residue...

My Mom's iPhone went through the washer and dryer and actually turned on. The screen was washed out a little (no pun intended) and was very dim, too dim for her to use, but it 'survived' the experience. I tried the hairdryer idea to dry it out, and even put it in the oven as low as I could manage it without risking the battery blowing... Ended up paying the 'OOW' fee at the Apple Store to get her a 'new' iPhone. I told her I would take it out of her allowance... ;-)

thats freakin VODKA.

I was referring to denatured or isopropyl alcohol for cleaning electronics.
I said UPPER DOUBLE DIGITS PERCENTAGE ALCOHOL.

Vodka is not 90-100% alcohol.

I personally have never tried this, but all i'm saying is that it MIGHT work.

Here are a few websites that has this method, many websites claim this works:

Alternative Drying Methods
There is an alternative way to save a wet cell phone that includes an alcohol soak. Alcohol is hygroscopic which means that it attracts water. Soaking your phone in denatured alcohol, or a 95% alcohol solution (regular rubbing alcohol is about 75%), soaks up all the water in the phone. When the liquid is dumped out, only alcohol, which will evaporate, remains. Make sure that the alcohol you use is denatured with only methanol as the chemicals found in other types can be damaging. This kind of alcohol can be purchased at your local hardware store. The alcohol soak may work best for phones that have been damaged by salt water or other liquids such as coffee.

how do i save my wet ipod touch?

yeahh. its inside the rice bag for 2 days.. and now i opened it and theres is an apple logo and then it will turn off again.. do you think its too late? :( im so sad..

Wrap up it in a paper towel or an old stocking to keep stuff out of the holes, and bury it in the dry uncooked rice/desiccant and seal up the bag. Leave it in a warm place (sunny window sill maybe) for several days before opening.

Wet iPod
