We went to best buy(Me and my father) because my parents computer crashed from all the viruses(Dell) so while we were there I showed my dad the Imac which he like a lot. I told him you dont have to worry about Viruses and you can still run windows! Well after talking to the sales Rep too. My dad purchased the 20 inch Imac thats the 2.4GHZ model for like 1300. So now we have my black macbook and the 20 inch Imac which I now envy. I can't post a pic since we hid it from my mom until Christmas day. I'm sure she'll love it just get use to the transition.

Congratulations! You do have to worry about viruses on an iMac if you'll be running Windows on it.

Well, if you do run windows on it, windows can still get a virus. However, the OS X partition would be fine.

The fact that the brand is Apple doesn't make the computer immune to viruses and such if it's running Windows. When running Windows it's just as susceptible as any other PC, so you should put some sort of antivirus software on the Windows part unless you'll only access the internet on the Mac side.

As long as he's not downloading "video codecs" and generally being responsible and within common sense he'll be fine without the need for any antivirus software.

It's actually pretty easy to get a virus on Windows, and the fact that their previous Dell had a lot of viruses means that the owner's day to day usage of the machine will invite viruses. Antivirus software is a very good idea if the user decides to run Windows.

I'm just suggesting that instead of wasting $50-$100 on reliable antivirus software, they should save the money and instead lay off the shady side of the internet. :)

Oh, I absolutely agree that $50-$100 is too much to spend. I was thinking more along the lines of AVG Free, as well as a degree of carefulness :)

I totally agree, I've been using this same old toshiba laptop running vista for years now and have never had a single problem... No antivirus software, no spyware software, but when you don't venture out of gmail, hulu, wikipedia, digg, and macrumors, its kinda hard to get kinky porn popping up all over your desktop. Virus' are not really a problem for anyone with some common sense, no offense to the thread starter though, I find my parents downloading all kinds of crap because they don't know their way around the internet very well.
