I think that’s a good question! First of all, Apple made it into an accessory name, so all different kinds of things now carry “MagSafe” in their product name.
And looking at the website the MagSafe chargers seem to provide a bit more charge power to the iPhone. Other than that it charges wirelessly as before.

I'm personally not excited as much (although that little wallet is cute!) but I am truly impressed how Apple have basically pivoted standard Qi charging into being a proprietary MFi royalty bearing fruit.

Also it'll let you charge your phone while using it again, which kind of negates the whole point of Qi charging, which was to just let something charge passively while it was sat around on your desk.

Great point. I think MagSafe opens the door for the portless iPhone in 2021 or 2022. They will make a magnet battery that will allow fast charging "on the fly". And you can use the MagSafe desktop charger to charge at your convenience. The desktop charger will obviously charge the magnet battery as well.

I've been wirelessly charging since my iPhone 8 so I'm wondering why people are going ga-ga over the whole MagSafe thing? What am I missing here????

Not about wireless charging...it's the built in magnets!

I can throw away my magnet plate now.

Ive had me XR stop charging when it was accidentally moved off-center of the charging pad. Never happens with the watch since it's magnetically coupled.

I bought a super cheesy desktop wireless charger from Amazon that I use on my nightstand to charge my iPhone 11 Pro. It's the same charger I've been using to wirelessly charge all my phones since the iPhone 8. That same cheesy charger has yet to let me down.....

"MFi royalty bearing fruit"

🤣🤣🤣 The truest sentence. lol.

I'm looking forward to spending a bunch more money on a whole new line of accessories! Honestly, I'm hoping for some really great car holder/charger products. This is all just a stepping stone to Apple's eventual complete removal of the lightning port.

UPDATE: I just remembered I can't use a wireless charger in the car because of CarPlay 😢

It seems like the potential for accessories is of greater use than the charging. There’s lots of new ways to attach things to the phone, or to mount the phone in the car while also charging. I think people will get creative with this aspect of it and the magnetized charging will be an afterthought.

It’s basically identical to the charger for the Apple Watch, and do we ever talk about that anymore?

The gross magnet I have on the outside of my phone case now can go away! No need when the magnet is built into the phone! Genius!

The biggest attraction is that a MagSafe pad can hold an iPhone vertically- suspended. It can act as a mount and charger at the same time.

Oh sir I see that you haven’t suffered the “Oh no I didn’t place my phone just in the center of the charger last nite when it was dark and I was tired and now my phone is dead for the rest of the day because I have no way to charge it, man if I just had had magnets to align it perfect I would not have this problem now”

Nope, I sure haven't. I don't remember how many years ago it was since I bought my $11 wireless charger from Amazon but like I said above, it has never let me down.

Nah, but I always wait for the buzz that indicates charging has started before I let go. Although my wireless charger is vertical and has a lip that you set the phone on, so it's harder to miss!

I just don't get the name. How is this way of wireless charging "safe". Isn't this more prone to be pulled off of a table if connected to these magnets than if just using a straight up wireless charger? Meaning that if I have my phone connected to this and someone trips over the cable isn't the phone more likely to be pulled to the ground with the cable?

When I think of MagSafe I think of the old MacBooks that had this feature to prevent the laptop from being pulled onto the floor if someone tripped on the cord. This new MagSafe seems like it will be more likely that that happens when connected.

Don't get me wrong, I still want it, but its a weird choice of names. Its almost like Apple thought "Well we've used this name before and it has magnet in the word so let's go with it."

That's exactly how mine works. I put my iPhone on the lip and it charges my phone every time. I can't see how anyone could screw that up?????

I think its quite genious. The wording "safe" is subconsciously used to sell this product in the unsafe corona times. People gobble it up.

Although in Apple's case it comes from long before that.

Mine is round and 1. it won't charge thru a case and 2 it has to be put on perfectly. Quite annoying.

Because I'm using old wireless pads that ... if the dang phone doesn't sit on it JUST RIGHT, it won't do anything or ... it'll heat everything up like crazy.

The idea that I can set my phone down on something and it automatically line up with the wireless pad --- I'm buying it. My wife is too. This is great.
