15w wireless charging for iPhones is new. Previously wireless charging maxed at 7.5w

Yes, to me, the big change here was that it allowed for much higher wattage wireless charging, which should be closer to a wired "fast-charge" in terms of speed.

Android phones have had 10W+ wireless fast-charging capability for awhile now, but Apple has been limited to 7.5W up until introduction of MagSafe.

My understanding is that ensuring the "perfect placement" with the magnets allows them to more safely charge at higher wattage without significant energy loss / efficiency loss from being off-center.

Have you ever tried to place your phone on a charging pad in the middle of the night, half asleep, and just miss the pad enough for it to not charge, only to wake up to a dead phone?

That’s why.

And, oh yeah, 15 watt charging is a nice boost over the standard 7.5 we had before MagSafe.

Exactly, it's twice as fast if you need it. Now for my nightstand, I'll continue to use the stand with the 7.5w since it works just fine and I can just grab and go (and accidently knock it off with my pillow like I've done from time to time, lol).

That's exactly how mine works. I put my iPhone on the lip and it charges my phone every time. I can't see how anyone could screw that up?????
Oh you would be surprised. Some days you don’t even hear the phone vibration when it starts charging, and my charger’s led is covered by my phone when I place it on. It happened to me only once or twice, but starting the day like that was ****. We would see if magnets solves that or there are just a gimmick.

Its a real shame that wireless CarPlay isn’t more common because one of the key advantages of MagSafe will be in magnetic car mounts with wireless charging
Wired CarPlay stops the wireless charging functionality
I may look into buying a wireless CarPlay adapter now!

Yeah I can’t see the big deal with it? I charge the house iPhones all using Qi pads... they don’t move. Yes I have to get it on it’s sweet spot sometimes but I don’t leave until I hear it beep / sais charging.

If you find a good one, let me know! None of the reviews on adapters are very good so I decided to hold off. oping there will be some improved accessories soon...

Also it'll let you charge your phone while using it again, which kind of negates the whole point of Qi charging, which was to just let something charge while it was just sat around on your desk.

EXACTLY. I don't understand the hype.

The only usefulness I find in having the magnet is for use on a car mount, that is it.

I'm glad to have 2 good hands which allow me to easily plug in my 2 meter lightning cable to the lightning port. Not once have I had an issue charging my iPhone, either on a desk or while using it.

The MagSafe will be key for whenever Apple decides to go port-less in about 3 years when the next re-design happens. I don't understand how people are going nuts buying the 1 meter MagSafe cable. Since this is for the benefit of Apple (to start training people on how to charge the phone when they remove the port), they should have included the MagSafe charger with the iPhone 12 (at least the Pros).

I have the 11 pro max and the apple site says the MagSafe is compatible with my phone. Is it just not worth the time to make mag safe cases for the 11 phones?

I never been on the wireless charging bandwagons, ever since I notice it charging slower than wire, back then it was 7.5w.

Still don’t plan to use it, but don’t mind getting a portable magnetic wallet size charging bank for the 12 Pro if it ever comes out.

I’ve just ordered one lol, it’s $129 and has good reviews. Google Carplay2air, maybe you’ve looked at this already but I thought I’d take a shot

iPhone 11 doesn’t have the magnets inside and so won’t do the MagSafe thing, so it only charges at 7.5w and not full 15w

I’ve got a Qi charger on my nightstand, and there are some mornings I wake up and my phone hasn’t charged. That shouldn’t happen anymore, and I like that.

I did see that one but I'm always skeptical because the ones w/ bad reviews look exactly the same so I'm always afraid it's the same unit w/ a licensing deal. I don't trust product site reviews because it's easy for them to filter out bad ones. SO let me know how it works for you after a few weeks or so!

It is made by Apple which usually means quality and usability. I guess we will know in a week if that applies to the MagSafe charger.

Small quality of life improvement. Most of my wireless chargers are the stand variety so I don't have to worry about aligning them correctly as much. Now I never have to worry at all.

I've been wirelessly charging since my iPhone 8 so I'm wondering why people are going ga-ga over the whole MagSafe thing? What am I missing here????
A lot, apparently. The magnetic connection and alignment is the entire reason they made MagSafe, and solves one of if not the biggest problem with inductive chargers: placement.

Not to mention the much less important but still reasonable complaint of being able to use and charge at the same time.

The stand variety is much easier to align compared to the horrible experience of the lay flat kind, but that's only a relative comparison. My brand new Belkin Boost Up still lets the iPhone slide a bit side to side, so its not always a perfect placement either.

The model Belkin is working on now is the future, and solves all these problems. Snaps right on, done. No fiddling, no misplacement. It just works.

Magnets are always the answer.

As soon as an adapter comes on the market that doesn't diminish the sound quality (music thru bluetooth sucks in all cars) let me know!

For me... the magnets (especially having a phone holder in the car, this would be nice to have) and fast charging is probably the two main factors for me. I do have a fast wireless charger, but sometime you have to set the phone right in order to charge it... so this would help lock the phone into place (like the watch charger)...

i know it's not really a good reason for wanting magsafe Lol... but when you have one of those tired days or drunk nights... you place your phone and next morning your phone is dead... this may help eliminate that haha.
