Absolutely. In my experience going the extra mile does get you further and it’s noticed. I work more than my required hours but my projects go over the line on time. A fellow mechanical engineer that works in my department goes home on the dot every single day and is often less motivated during the day. He moans about not getting a pay rise but has never pushed himself. He has no idea I earn £8k more a year than him and I’d never admit that, but it’s because I deliver and he doesn’t. Some people just have an appalling work ethic and expect progression just for turning up and doing their job, not exceeding expectations.
surprised you know your coworker's wages but not vice versa.....

We were hired on the same wage and I have been rewarded since. He talks about his salary and I don’t. Nothing surprising here.
I recall a job many years ago. I was a teenager. Two of us started on the same day at the same wage. She was a real hard worker. I was a little worse for wear most mornings. In my year there I asked for three pay rises and received three pay rises. She was still on the starting salary.
I told her on my last day.

Standing out and excelling is fine, especially when the business you work for recognizes that and rewards it.

I've worked for too many companies that recognize all that only to…abuse you. You stand out, so you get stuff added to your workload without compensation but with the expectation that you WILL excel at this new thing.

You become their fool, with the boss dumping everything on you but not paying you a penny more. You can't ask for a raise because the company is managed by an idiot and there is no money for that. Besides…you've already proved that you will excel without compensation so why should they have to pay you more? Advancement/promotion? In a small business? To what? You aren't the owner, not part of their family and they aren't giving you a share of THEIR profits. You're already the guy running everything.

Quit? Go ahead. You are after all, replaceable. And guess what, the new guy they hire and continue the trend with - they will pay less because your 'expensive' salary is no longer being paid and they pocket the difference.

You all sound like you work for good companies that recognize your hard work and rewards it. If your company is a small business then that's great because it does not seem to be the norm where I am.

Finally, there is responsibility. You excel, they move you into more responsibility and you get more reward for that. That's great, but you're also the guy responsible when stuff goes wrong. I'm almost 51 and I've had 14+ years (in my previous job) of being the guy responsible without compensation or reward for my hard work. I don't want that responsibility anymore.

I work from home. With all the discussions recently regarding WFH for Apple employees, what do you think about working from home? Should you actually work your hours effectively, or should you be slacking and maximize your free time?
Honestly, I probably spend more time on MacRumors than I did before I started working from home.
