I was going to get (on the 8core version):

  • 1TB Ram (and use USB-C SSDs for additional storage/backups etc)
  • 5500m with 8GB
  • 32GB Ram
  • Upgraded CPU

I will be using it for:

  • Graphics work (not 3D)
  • Final Cut Pro
  • Logic

However toying with leaving CPU upgrade and going for 64GB ram, but interested in your recommended spec and why you recommend it ?

I'd get the higher-end config (with 8-core and 5500M). Don't bother with the i9-9980HK. These days, there is no such thing as "not 3D" by the way, GPU-acceleration is used everywhere. And programs you mention do utilise the GPU.

I'd upgrade the GPU. Should help with the programs you use depending on how you use them. 64GB RAM is OVERKILL!

Graphics work/FCP/Logic is relatively vague - that could mean anything from a MacBook Air to a top of the range MacBook Pro could suffice. It will all depend on the size of the projects you are working on, and I don't think anyone can give an accurate guess without knowing your workflow.

Most benchmarks for previous 15-inch MacBook Pros, which use identical CPUs, show 5-15% increase in performance between 2.3 GHz and 2.4 GHz i9. These increases are not particularly imperceptible.

If you can make use out of it, when it comes to MacBook Pro, your money is better spend upgrading storage first, then RAM, then GPU, and finally CPU.

I will be going with $2,799 config BTO with 32GB RAM ($3199).
