they use whatever is the cheapest they can get, which usually is the hitachi "deathstar" HDDs, which are known for a really high failure rate. NO, a 12.5mm HDD will not fit. Go with a 7200RPM drive, you will notice the difference from a 5400 to a 7200 drive.

As a note, the entire Hitachi Deskstar line has about a 45% failure rate, where as most other mfgs have about a 15% failure rate.
Why are you comparing desktop drives with laptop drives?

MTBF are about the same across manufacturers. Most data show that high failure rates in drives are primarily dependent on age and manufacturing batches. There are very few actual bad drives models within the industry.

There are always self-proclaimed who'll crow against one manufacturer or another because they personally had a series of bad experiences. It's usually just anecdote that can't be backed up with relevant data. One guy will carry a hardon against Hitachi, next guy Seagate, the guy next to him against Samsung.

The truth is that it doesn't really matter which manufacturer's drive is in your MBP.

I use all WD. Love how they have advanced RAM which can be processed right on there website. Also have had good luck with them, at work I have installed 150+ 160GB Scorpio Black drives and only 2 were DOA and all others have been going for 1+ years. In my MacBook I have a 750GB Scorpio Black which outperforms the 500GB 7200RPM Seagate that was original by a very large amount.
