no way. so basically you are using your phone for two hours? That can't be right.

Yeah, 2.5 hours or so. After the battery shows that it's no longer full, it pretty much nose dives from that point. It goes from 90% to 50% in about an hour and from 50% to 20% in about a half an hour.

i'd get it checked out by someone who is willing to do their job. obviously the person you talked to did not want to do his/her job. there is no way a phone should only last a couple hours.

Remember that they claim 300 hours of standby, or other values for different activities. Based on their specs it would be the following conversion:

1 hour edge phone = 30 hours standby
1 hour 3g phone = 60 hours standby
1 hour 3g data = 60 hours standby
1 hour wifi data = 50 hours standby
1 hour video = 42.9 hours standby
1 hour audio = 12.5 hours standby

So if you were to talk for an hour (3g), surf an hour on 3g, and another two hours on wifi after listening to 2 hours of music you should expect:

300 - 60(1) - 60(1) - 50(2) - 12.5(2) = 55 hours of standby left, which is two days. But remember that your total 6 hours of usage need to be spread over the two days, so it is really about 3 hours of use per 24 hours of standby.

Games may use significantly more power than any other application as well. Downloading a video and then playing it will use more power than playing one stored locally.

I don't know how they measure Internet usage, but the power use depends on how much gets downloaded -- running the radio is expensive. If you download plain text and read it for a long time it will last orders of magnitude longer than streaming video from Youtube constantly. So streaming online video might be more like 100 hours of standby per hour equivalent.

I had 3G off all day. I was on EDGE and had everything else off. I'm going to go back as this really isn't acceptable. There's no point to even owning a 3G if I can't use the 3G and any of the features on it. If the genius bar refuses to do anything next week, I might as well take it back before my 30 days are up.

Are you in an area with poor signal strength?

When I'm deep inside the building at work, I get zero signal whatsoever, and if I don't put the phone in airplane mode, the battery will be significantly lower after a few hours of trying to find itself a signal (my original 2G iPhone did the same thing).

With normal cellular signal strength, I've gone 36 hrs on a single charge with modest use.

I get 5 bars of EDGE at home and 3G I get 1-2. Like I said, I tested it with 3G and then with EDGE today and had about the same stats. My battery on my 1st gen iPhone lasted twice as long, and I had it in the same areas.

Battery is pretty good

I’ve had my iPhone for nearly 2 weeks now and I honestly think the battery life is pretty good.

I use it everyday for general stuff (music, phone, video, email, internet, to-do-lists) and at the end of my day I still have at least 60-70% battery bar. Last night, I even watched a full rented movie before I went to bed and it was still at 60-70%. I didn’t even have to adjust my settings (like switch off 3G) although I do keep my brightness on at about 40%, but only because anything more is too bright for me.

I honestly think some users have, unfortunately, gotten bad batteries.

From my experience, you should at least get a full day’s use (5-6 hours active use) without having to worry about battery loss.

There's definitely something wrong with your battery. Edge should last you days...seriously! If you have Edge standby and use it occasionally it should last three days.

Like I said. 3G on all day with some internet/phone/email/music should easily last a day. Anything else is unacceptable.

You were lied to. Your iPhone is NOT 100% what it should be.

I will post screenshots later. I had a heavy usage day today. Over 1 hour on phone. 2 hours Music. 2 hours on EDGE. 1.5 hours WiFi. Location On 50% of the day. Auto-brightness and Ask to Connect turned OFF.

Battery at 29% (psst I have the hack that shows battery percentage)
Usage 4 hours, 47 minutes
Standby 14 hours, 42 minutes

that is PATHETIC usage.

i would expect at least 4-5 days out of it.

definately not buying it now.

LoL does your Macbook Pro go 4-5 days w/ out charging? Can ANY notebook last that long w/out charging? And you call this tiny phone w/ a tiny battery that can go 1-2 days without charging pathetic?

your argument has no credibility.

of course a laptop wont last 4-5 days!!!! its a laptop!! the longest lasting notebook is what 10 hours??

if you look at other rival smartphones (LG's prada & samsums F700) you will find that they get 3-5days battery life. the iphone is hardly getting 1....its a pretty poor battery life for my likings, yes its an amazing phone, yes it has 16gb FLASH memory (which doesnt use much battery life anyway) but having a 1 day battery life is just hopeless.

3G power consumption is near 50% more than the older 1G iphones, i dont know why they "downgraded" in this department, they probably should have waited until the technology developed more like they always do.

I'm sitting here looking at my phone after reading about your HORRIBLE battery life.

I currently have the following usage and standby times:
Usage: 6 hours, 56 minutes
Standby: 22 Hours, 41 minutes

This has been on ONE full charge.

Also, i still had about 20% battery life left when I plugged it in a few minutes ago.

If I were you, i'd take it back and swap it out. The guy from the apple store that you talked to, is a complete idiot. Just know that sometimes it's hardest for an idiot to admit when he's an idiot, even if the rest of the world agrees that he is a total idiot. =)

Talk to someone else, arrange to talk with a genius or manager. I've talked to a handful of people from the apple stores and out of about 10 different people over the course of the last 2-3 weeks, i'd say only about 2 or 3 of them had any sort of common sense.

In fact, let me tell you a quick story. I was standing in line with my friend to get our iphones when we had a funny encounter.. or not so funny encounter. To start off, I wanted to get my girlfriend an iphone3g 16gb white, and get myself a black one. My friend wanted one as well, so we tried everywhere but they were sold out. So, we drove 2 hours to king of prussia mall in pennsylvania to get one. We stood in line for about 4 or 5 hours before some fat gay dude came over to us and asked if we could go through the pre-approval process. We agreed, but before he even tried, he asked us some questions.

Some fo the questions included, "Have you ever had a discount rate code on your at&t account, and does your billing zipcode match the zipcode of area code of your phone number". My friends zip code didnt match, and I did have a discount on the account. However, before we even got to the mall we called At&t and had them remove the discount because I already knew about their problems with that. The gay fat dude then decided he would tell us to get out of line and go home or do something else because he couldnt sell us a phone. Those were his exact words. It took a few minutes of arguing before finally i told him I was going to punch him in his mouth if he didnt get the hell away from me. He walked away, and another apple guy came over and asked what the problem was. I told him, "im going to punch your fat buddy in the mouth if you can't at least TRY to process our orders". I then told him that we had waited in line for 5 hours to hear this crap, and that we took care of everything before we got to the store. Apparently apple claims it takes up to 24 hours to update their system to be able to process an order after you've made these kinds of changes....well, we found out that it doesn't. The dude processed our orders for pre-approval and both of them went through fine.

This just goes to show you, that there are tons of morons in the world....

Oh, and we stood in line for a total of 7 hours before getting our iphone3g, with about another hour with activation of 3 phones plus buying accessories.

I'm at 4 hours, 2 min of use (mostly 3G/Wifi internet, not much phone) and 2 days, 15 hours of standby. Still haven't gotten the 20% battery warning yet.

Some might say that sort of thing makes you look a bit of a douchebag, as our transatlantic cousins would say. Just saying.

It's all good, how would you have felt if you stood in line for 5 hours KNOWING they had a phone to sell you, and knowing they were refusing to sell it to you without even checking to see if you were eligible.

Umm, douchebag or not... I was pissed and that's what happens when you get the hulk angry!! =)

that sucks. i know how you feel though. the fat guy your talking about seems like someone who just does not want to do their job. it annoys me to no end when someone does not want to do their job 110%. just quit if you don't like it, there are plenty of jobs out there.

Exactly! Instead they just ruin the customers experience with the company. I mean, we had to drive 2 hours to get there, and I had already driven 1 hour to get to my friends house. So a 3 hour drive, plus at that point it was 5 hours of standing in line..... and he wasnt even willing to try. Umm, yeah right i was not going to give up that easy.

He should definitely quit, and so should a handful of the other losers that work at the apple stores.
