Hello Harry,

Sometimes the brand and dye of the DVD surface may not be compatible with some players.
Have you tried just one brand or several brands?
Could you please list the brands you have used and whether each one is a DVD+R, DVD-R or DVD+RW?

I have just checked at Sony's website and it says the following about the BDP-S350:

BD-R/RE Read Compatibility : Yes (BDMV & BDAV format)
BD-ROM : Yes
CD (CD-DA) : Yes
DVD Playback : Yes
DVD+R Read Compatibility : Yes
DVD+RW Read Compatibility : Yes
DVD-R Read Compatibility : Yes (Video Mode and VR Mode)
DVD-RW Read Compatibility : Yes (Video Mode and VR Mode)
JPEG Playback : Yes
x.v.Color™ Technology : Yes

Hopefully good news:
There's a firmware update for this player.
It's version 024, dated 05/27/2011:

Well, that's all I have to say for now.

Hi John,

Thanks for your reply. All the disks I used are DVD-R, and I have about 4-5 different brands...including Sony, Phillips, Fujifilm, Memorex and some that I got from work with no name on them. Let me try this update and see what happens...

Thanks,
Harry

I'm of the mind that either you have to install the firmware update or there's something wrong with it. And as someone else pointed out it is possible that your Sony player doesn't like the disks you're using although I think that's remote.

DVD-R are the most compatible ones. I have a Pioneer DVD Player that wouldn't play DVD+R no matter what I do; it has something to do with the Laser it uses.

I certainly hope the Firmware update may solve your problem. :D

I've noticed some older DVD drives that don't even recognize recent dual layer Verbatim DVD-R discs. Firmware updates for drives often add support for new media types.

When your Sony player doesn't play the disc, does it spin for a while and then spit out the disc? If so, that is either a disc that cannot be read (dirt, scratches and aged burned discs - unlikely given you previous posts) or a Media ID that the player doesn't recognize.

I'm hoping the firmware update fixes this.

I've used "DVD Media Inspector" on a PPC for a few years to identify the REAL manufacturer of media. Sometimes, the same brand name switch actual manufacturers.

I notice that there is a newer version which is now Universal Binary, but I'm not sure how wide it's support is for various drives. Try it out and let us know what you get. The Media ID will be somewhere in the resultant text and should be a recognizable name.
