Down south
I just cannot seem to get my Apple pay to work. What am I missing? Does it have to be open all the time? I just can't ever get it to scan.

I honestly have never used it on my phone either, but would LOVE to get it working on my watch because it's right there on my wrist.

I think I did, but honestly now I don't know. I'm gonna have to go to Subway for lunch today just so I can try it. ;-p

Does your card come up on your phone/watch when you are trying to use it?

OP:

Didn't you have previous issues with AP on your iPhone? May be wrong--

I would start with the basics, if not done--

1. Make sure your bank takes AP and they have it set up for you.
2. Have all your credit card info correctly entered into AP on your iPhone, including exp date.
3. Make sure it is set as default card.
4. Watch a couple on-line videos on how to set up and use AP.

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204506#iphone

Something is just missing in your setup or how you are using it--

If your iPhone is set up correctly and works with AP, try this:

"Add a card on your Apple Watch
  1. Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone, and go to the My Watch tab. If you have multiple watches, choose one.
  2. Tap Wallet & Apple Pay.
  3. Follow the steps to add a card. To add a new card, tap Add Credit or Debit Card. ...
  4. Tap Next. ...
  5. After your bank or issuer verifies your card, tap Next."
Hope you get it sorted--

Apple Pay can't be open all the time. If you double click the side button your default card should show up. If you don't make a payment it will go away after a few minutes.

With some retailers you have to let them know you're using Apple Pay. With other place I just wait until the terminal lights up or shows the NFC symbol. Hope you get it working. I pay with my watch all the time and it is so convenient!

She should be back from Subway by now. Inquisitive minds want to know what happened--:)

Something else that I have not seen mentioned, your phone/watch must be password/FaceID protected. No password, no Apple Pay. The reason is obvious, if someone scarfed your phone/watch they could go on a shopping spree.

Sorry. I never went to Subway that day, and I haven’t had to work since, so I haven’t had a chance to go again. We just don’t have a ton of places that use Apple Pay around here.

Yes. I really want to get the hang of it just for the convenience factor.

I used Apple Pay today for the first time on my watch, it’s even easier to use than on my iPhone Xs, I love it, nice, simple, fast.

I love using it on my watch, its extremely convenient... Once you get the hang of it you will love it. I especially love that chase atm's take apple pay now, its a breeze to withdraw or deposit money without even going in my pockets.

Apple Pay has really been the 'killer feature' for me. It's just so fast and convenient (not to mention secure).

Oh that's awesome! I had no idea! I don't use the ATM much, but I am a Chase customer, so I'll keep that in mind for sure!

We're lucky over here as most places take contactless/Apple Pay

I live in an area where I can't even get high speed internet. I'm at the mercy of AT&T data, and lately even that sucks. I doubt Apple pay will be in any of my local places anytime soon.

The Subway is actually in the little town I work in; not even where I live.

It’s probably a lot more places than you realize. I’m slightly annoyed when I have to get out my wallet nowadays, because most places I go take it. Not just restaurants, but a lot of stores. And even the airport— I got all the way through the airport with just my watch for a recent flight— no paper boarding pass and no pulling my phone out. Even TSA lets you through with the boarding pass on your watch.

(Oh, just read your latest post.)

Even Ticketmaster lets you store your passes in your Apple wallet. A security guard at the last concert I went to was so shocked when he saw me present the QR code on my watch to get in!

I have my Visa set as the default card for AP on my XS Max. And when I double click on the iPhone it brings that card up. However on my S4 watch when I double click the side button it always brings up my Amex first. Any ideas on this?

The iPhone and the Watch have different Apple Pay settings. You set the default for each.

Go into your Apple Watch app in the phone and set it how you like.

I have multiple credit cards in my Apple wallet and this is something that is really screwy. For the iPhone you can just go into your wallet app and drag the cards into the order you want (including the 'default' card). For the watch you need to go into the Apple watch app on the phone. It initially appears that you can't reorder the cards but you actually can if you keep picking a new 'default' card. The old default card will become next in the list when you do that. You keep doing that until the order is the way you want it and you have the correct default card.

In the watch app on your Phone, look in the wallet settings and make the default your Visa.

EDIT: Oops got beat out.
