Shamless plug but I review iPhone apps for the newspaper's Web site here in Jax and this is my review (with pix) of my essential apps.

It might give you some ideas.

Sudoku (first by EA, then I got tired of waiting the intro out so I got the Sudoku Unlimited)
BeeJive/IM+ (since I'm on 3.0, they both have their equal share of crashes...but on 2.2.1, BeeJive because of the message history emailing capability)

Shazam is by far most useful for me. Between me and the wife we have tag a crap load of songs. I also like some of the camera effect apps.

    Useful (Productive)
    1. iDial - Contact Search (99 cents)
    2. Arachnid Lite (free Full Browser)
    3. Faces Visual Dialer Lite (Free)

iPhone keypad dialing is terrible for making calls while dialing. iDial and Faces Lite help me a lot. Arachnid full browser doesn't want me to go back to Safari. I might soon buy their full version which is $1.99.

    Other well used apps:
    1. NBA Game Time
    2. Free RSS Reader
    3. Movies
    4. TVU Player (Let's me watch several Indian Language channels including Telugu)
