So, some think Apple may announce an AppleTV API for developers at WWDC. What sort of apps would you like to see? I'd love a full-featured Plex app and Hulu. And a RSS reader that syncs with Google Reader.

    Must have IMO

Plex Client, Hulu(+), VLC, News Reader (Either RSS or at least iOS/Safari lists), Notification Center.

A Plex app doesn't make sense, because it would take over the ATV GUI in favor of its own. Apple won't allow it.

    Hulu? or Huluplus?

I'm not following the business logic behind Apple offering Google Reader functionality on its set-top box?

I disagreed, the Plex App for iOS use build in APIs it would take over the UI just like the NBA, Youtube, Vimeo and all the other existing stock apps do. it won't replat the dashboard it will be a regular app.

Isn't Plex just a different way to organize and access your media? Why would Apple allow that on the Apple TV?

Just trying to understand the business logic.

why not? again it is not taking over the main UI or Apple business it is just an app, like a clock app, weather app, etc. and it is already on iOS devices that can run apps. no real threat to apple business at all.

I like the Plex UI. Am I the only one? Isn't the UI one of the prime reasons people choose Plex over say, Boxee, or straight-up XBMC (yes I know they are both derived from XBMC).

Well,, Plex UI on the ATV looks just like Stock UI, which is one of the reason I love it, but it is not "the" reason I chose it. I like plex in general since i can stream my media over the internet to any client, share my library with family and friends, and it does a lot of metataging and organizing automatically.

Plex is already on iOS. I have it on my iPad. It can already stream stuff from iPad to AppleTV. It's pretty dang good. Of course Apple would allow it. It communicates with Plex Server.

that only matters if you're suggesting that Apple views the ATV like any other iDevice, which they clearly don't.

How about Apple just makes ATV easier to jailbreak and let us do whatever the hell we desire.

I'd like Hulu, HBOGo, and Pandora. That's about it.

hulu and sling player are the two big ones for me. I feel like I have been waiting forever, and I still think there is only a 50/50 chance this will happen.

I also think if they do open it up to an app store Apple won't be able to keep these in stock.

Yup. Truer words have never been spoken.

Server status apps, iStat-pro like-apps for network attached computers, etc. Media players, browsing video sites, FaceTime, etc, just open the dang app store for AppleTV and it will be the hottest item.

You do realize this is Apple we're talking about, right?

    That ain't how they operate.

PLEX isn't an alternative method to acquire new content and thus isn't a threat to iTunes purchased content, whether on an iPhone, iPod, iPad, or :apple:TV. If anything, apps like ABC, NBC, etc, are more likely to result in consumers not purchasing that content via iTunes. If Apple is OK with allowing those apps on iDevices, I don't see why PLEX wouldn't be allowed on the :apple:TV.

Personally, I'd love to see PLEX, NFL Sunday Ticket, Slingplayer, and Amazon Instant Video (fat chance, I know).

So, why isn't Plex being offered now on the Apple TV now?

    Really? Are you serious?

How about because there is no APP STORE, and thus no third party apps on the :apple:TV. Hence the excitement that 'Apple may announce an AppleTV API for developers at WWDC' as offered by the OP.

SlingPlayer, with the ability to stream in 1080i (what the Pro-HD is capable of.)

This, and the ability to stream directly from the Time Capsule (or any NAS for that matter) is all I'll ever need.

NFL Sunday Ticket would be a dream come true, but they'd have to pry it away from Murdoch's corpse.

Main ones I want to see are:

    ~Plex
    ~BBC iPlayer
    ~ITV Player
    ~TVcatchup.com

An app store for the apple tv is probably the thing I'm most looking forward to (fingers crossed).
