What are kernel panics?

Im attempting to undervolt my macbook air with coolbook and am not sure what to expect if i go too far and it causes a "KP". I dont know what that means..

similar to the blue screen of death in windows. the computer stops working, a screen pops up saying something went wrong and you need to reboot to fix it
