So I preordered the new M1 iMac and it arrived on the 27th of May. Performance wise, it's one hell of a beast. I obviously don't need to go into detail since we all know the performance of the M1 chipset is absolutely stellar. Also, I'm truly digging the added bonus of color options. But I'm just coming to find that I really did enjoy my 27" more. Mostly with the speaker quality and how loud they got. Not to mention the bigger screen size did help out a lot, even with it just being an extra 3 or so inches.

I know I'm past my 14 day return window, so I'm going to guess there's no real point in calling up and asking. But if I spend $2,600 on a computer that I'm planning to get through the next 5 years+ with, I want to be happy with it. And as much as I like the design, it just isn't cutting it for me.

Has anyone else here had any luck exchanging out a Mac for a different model after the return period has come to a close?

I think listing country could make a difference :) - But no I have no such experience. I will say though that for the speakers you can just use an actual set of speakers. Compared to actually having speakers the ones in the 27" iMac aren't great either, and I say that sitting with the 2020 27" iMac and my AudioEngine A5+ :)

If was a few days they might, are the speakers that bad? From reading on here most don’t have a problem going from 27“ to 24”?
I sold my 27” and am just using a new M1 12.9” lol, thinking about the 24” though.

The speakers are an improvement over the 21.5” by quite a margin. But a definite downgrade from the 27” from what I’ve heard in store. But my opinion is that using either computer as my speakers would make me hate audio in the long run, haha.

Then there's no real downside for you in getting in touch with Apple and asking them to do you a favor. If Apple says no, you will be in the same position as you are now. But if you find a sympathetic customer service agent, store employee, or Executive Relations person, maybe you'll be able to get a refund or some kind of credit.

Your "chances" can improve if you can give Apple-people a reason to want to bend the rules for you. This could be many things: you're a long-time customer, you're a big-spending customer, something outside of your control happened, you're such a massive Apple fan you were willing to buy before a product was released, etc. But if you take a confrontational approach or just demand a refund, it's unlikely you'll be able to get what you want.

Try to return it, there is no rush. I have a 2014 MBP and I have been waiting a long time to get a new one and I have no rush either. So... if you do not need it now... try to return it.

You're almost double the grace period for returns so don't go in with high hopes. But do go in and ask them if they'll take the return. Nothing to lose!

Get a pair of EXTERNAL USB self-powered speakers.
They'll sound better than ANY internal speaker.

Next time, don't let "the buying fever" rule over logic in your buying decisions.
You have what you have.
Too late to return it now.

Wait until the new, larger screen iMac is released later this year.
Perhaps you can sell what you have for not-too-much of a loss, and get the larger screen version.
But WAIT UNTIL IT'S RELEASED, and check it out BEFORE you buy.

Blame on being ill or some other reason that prevented you from testing The iMac sooner after delivery. You may get lucky. :)
