    1. 17" MBP
    2011 MacBook Pro 6,1
    Intel Core i5 - 2.53 GHz
    4 GB RAM
    500 GB HDD - 5400 rpm
    DVD +/- R drive

(Can I take this one up to 16 GB Ram and add an SSD / HDD in addition/ replacement to existing one?)

    2. 13" MBP
    2007/08 Apple MacBook Pro A1278
    Core 2 Duo?

What can I upgrade? I have access to bunch old parts.. memory, hdds, ssds.

    - I am thinking RAM and SSD?
.. What RAM SODIMM frequency would it accept? Non-Apple RAMs? Max Size? 1/2 slots?
    .. Same question for SSD?

You can find specs on all Apple products, including maximum RAM and RAM specifications:

    8GB Kit (4GBx2) DDR3 PC3-8500 Unbuffered NON-ECC 1.35V 512Meg x 64
    CT3309370
    DDR3 PC3-8500 • CL=7 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1066 • 1.35V • 512Meg x 64 • lead free • halogen free • for Mac
upgrade for Apple MacBook Pro (17-inch, Mid 2010) system.

This is the match from Crucial.

I am wondering which higher PC3 memory sticks would work fine here/ be downward compatible?
