What are some PDF/eBook designer/creator softwares for Mac

I would like to make design my own eBooks or PDF files with adding pictures capability, and of course, adding text. I would like it to be feature-rich, and preferably free. But I need it to be nice and have the picture adding feature, and I would like to be able to do a lot of customizing to the pages in the PDF.

What are some eBook or PDF designing software/freeware for mac?
 
First of all any application on OS X can "print" to a PDF file. One choice for freeware would be some variant of OpenOffice/LibreOffice. I am not sure what ebook formats are supported by the variants.

Not free, but Pages can create epub format books as well as PDFs.

There's $$$ Adobe software as well of course.
