I've been moving away from Apple lately - for various reasons, moving away from Intel, the cost and unrepairability of devices and for constantly trying to shove political agendas down our throats when trying to use their services. I got an Apple TV in May, which was fantastic for my iPhone and Mac, but now the Mac is gone and as soon as I can get my hands on a Surface Duo the iPhone will be too. I'm hoping to find a similarly priced, similarly featured box for my non smart TVs to be able to stream an android phone / Windows PC to to watch media.

What such options exist?

Nvidia Shield seems to be the best all-around alternative. It's powerful and has a good community behind it.

Anyone deep in the Amazon ecosystem would probably enjoy the various FireTV products too. Personally I'm trying to avoid Bezos'ing my home too much, but I can see the appeal of it.

I've read the Tivo Stream 4k is also a very powerful and hackable Android TV stick for the money.

Personally I really hate Roku. I've tried it three times over the past ~6 years, and each time has been a terrible experience. So I urge people to stay away from that.

Thanks! I'll give them a look online

Roku has been rock solid for me, especially the new Ultra model. These usually go on sale for $49 during Black Friday. They have the ATV+ app. The only one missing is HBO Max which will eventually get added.

I tried the Nvidia Shield a few months ago and was not impressed at all. Interface was sluggish.

I'm pretty sure you can't receive Atmos content on Netflix (and, I think, Amazon Prime either) with a Roku, if that matters. I have an older Roku Ultra and am thinking of getting an ATV as a result.
