What are the benefits of integrated graphics vs dedicated graphics?

I can second what everyone is saying. There is no lag in UI interface for Mavericks.

In fact I am very surprised people are evening talking about "lag"

I'm so use to buttery smooth performance on my late 2013 2.6/8/256 13" MBPr that I would be pretty disheartened if I upgrade to Yosemite and things weren't smooth.

I love my MBPr

I've owned a few MacBook Pro's over the years, and honestly prefer models without discrete graphics as there's less to deal with when it comes to switching between cards (not to mention the issues that have plagued previous generations like NVIDIA and AMD card failures).

You can already see a trend in the MacBook Pro with Retina display where only the highest end model offers a discrete NVIDIA graphics processor, all other models are now using Intel Iris or Iris Pro. I wouldn't be surprised in the next few years to see NViDIA and AMD dropped entirely from the MacBook line-up and Intel graphics become the only option as Intel has been doing quite a bit of work in getting performance up to par with discrete graphics processors.

I agree with this post.

I really do believe that eventually dGPU will be dropped AS STOCK as Intel offers cards with excellent iGPU that pretty much handle 99% of tasks.

I DO BELIEVE that dGPU will be offered but as a custom order add on for a ridiculous price i.e. $300

It's a price I wouldn't mind paying. I'm a cinematographer by profession and I need that dGPU for my work.

So for all those who are saying a dgpu isn't necessary, there appears to be a need for it running Yosemite.

Well, certainly an average user doesn't need a dGPU to run Yosemite; however that doesn't mean you don't need one want to run certain apps at their best.

I decided to go for it because I like some gaming (Windows via Boot Camp). That's basically the main reason I decided to get the a rMBP with a dGPU. Otherwise I wouldn't have thought of getting one. I don't regret the decision one bit. It was a good decision, and I would do it again.

I would like to have that option again in the future, but if i hadn't , they'd better offer iGPUs that make me forget the dGPU performance.
