What do you think? Sorry if this has been discussed before .. but I am just curious.

With the popularity of the Flip's and whatnot I am curious if you all think that Apple is going to give us HD 720p video functionality in the next iPhone?

Or do you think we'll get basically with the iPod nano's have now?

since the 3gs already shoots videos like the ipod nano if not better we could get HD on the next one. I think there are cameras with a 5MPx sensor that shoot HD video, not sure about 720p or 720i though

    50/50.

Either way it'll be much better than the iPod nano's 0.3 megapixels.

Well, 720p is legit HD so if it is going to have HD then it needs to be at least 720p.

But I mean I know the Flip MinoHD is a small HD pocket cam but the lens is much bigger than what can fit in an iPhone and it is thicker and all it does is take video - so I'm a little skeptical but if any company can pull it off I think it is Apple.

I know 720 is HD, what I said is I don't know if it would be 720p or 720i
Lenses mean nothing, it's all about the sensor, there are many nokias with bigger lenses than the iPhones, doesn't mean the photos are better or the sensors are bigger and the result is less noisier.
To tell you the truth the whole HD thing is pretty much a gimmick, IMO, and since the videos shot by the iPhone are pretty decent for sharing online, viewing on the computer screen or on the iPhone's.. there's no real reason to update that as well. The bigger it gets the heavier the videos are and the harder it gets to share the whole thing. Same thing for the photos, they're pretty decent for casual shooting, but looks like Apple wants to upgrade to 5MPx probably just to keep up with some new smartphones.
I still don't know if there are many cellphones with 5MPx sensors that shoot HD, we'll see.
EDIT: I know found out that the Samsung Instinct HD has a 5MPx sensor and shoots 720HD

    1) No, the next iPhone will probably not shoot in HD. The current camera in the 3Gs can already shoot video with a higher resolution but they don't allow this. The camera in the 3Gs just shoots in VGA resolution. I guess they will 'turn it down' with the 4G as well.

    2) Both lens and sensor matters

    3) Next iPhone probably will have 64 GB of free space. Even 32 GB can be enough.

    4) Theoratical it's possible to make 3 megapixel pictures with a 5 megapixel camera. If Apple just could make a feature that you could decide how many megapixels you use... - but then again: probably 64 GB space so it won't be necessary.

Why wouldn't they allow for the video to be shot in higher resolution? And yeah, the reason why I would want an iPhone to shoot in 720p HD is because the next one will most likely have 64 GB of space, compared to just like 4 GB on the Flip MinoHD's.

Well, I was just curious on what everyone thought the chances were. Hopefully we'll all be surprised because I know Apple realizes how important video is these days.
