Great solution but that'd be a pain for anyone using an app which supports (theoretically) 3D Touch and the pencil cause then you'd have to switch between inputs I.e from pencil to fingers just to get to the feature you want which results in a substandard user experience. Albeit it is a trade off worth it for both technologies.

Since the Pencil has its own pressure sensors, you would have to separate the inputs anyway. Presumably, you'd have the option to make them do the same thing if it makes sense.

As for probability, I think that next year is iffy. 3D Touch added so much weight and thickness that Apple would have to have a *major* savings lined up in order to do it on an iPad scale. I could easily be wrong, but I'd put a higher probability on two years.

There is an elegant solution for that too. There needs to no trade off. When you use the Pencil to invoke 3D touch it'll just ignore the devices 3D touch and use the Pencil's pressure sensitivity to measure and use 3D touch.

People have already figured out how to do that with the Pencil on the iPad Pro. Check out the video on twitter.

It's not a must-have feature for me on the iPad, although I do like 3D Touch on the iPhone and force touch on the MacBook. Just give me 4GB of RAM. A9X, and improved speakers (maybe one on each side) and I'll be happy.

I love the peek and pop feature a lot with certain football apps so I do hope he arrives on air 3

Give me the iPad Pro's speakers and 3D Touch on Air 3 and I'm good. I was waiting on getting a 3 anyway and disappointed they skipped it to focus on a niche product (yes I said it). Hopefully it's not a full year skip and there's a spring announcement. Didn't they skip a year before on one of the iPads? Mini I think? Man I hope not.
They never skipped generations on the ipads.. this is the first ipad skip. maybe you're thinking of the ridiculous ipad mini 3 which was an "upgrade" LOLLL. but yea, it was still an upgrade, not a skip. LOL

3D touch seems more suited to a handheld device operated with one hand.

Having a phone sandwiched between the palm and opposing thumb makes it easy to squeeze precisely for either a peek or a pop. With a tablet sized device, I imagine it'll be harder to get just the right amount of force - particularly near the center of the screen.

Yeah I'm not completely convinced 3D Touch in its current form would work as well on much larger screens. But who knows what Apple has planned for it going forward. I'm sure what we saw with iPhone 6S isn't the extent of it. Next years WWDC should be interesting.

I really hope we see 3D touch on the iPad and in iWork since I think it holds the promise of going beyond short cuts to new and better interface models. But even as shortcuts, it'll speed up the iPad creation experience which currently favors laptops.

Pretty sure the air3 will have 3D Touch. What it won't have will be support for the Apple pencil.

That will be exclusively on the iPad Pro only.

That's exactly what I was thinking of. Only in apples world was that an upgrade. More like an insult. Here's a new color with last years internals and touch id. Give us your money.
