Is anyone able to elaborate on the practical benefits of the new (or updated) HTTP video streaming "feature"?

Does anyone think that this would make it easier for a Netflix or Hulu to start streaming to the iPhone using a native app?

It's definitely a start. But I think it's more for the content provider to ensure the best playback, not to help the carriers.
