I just got an iPhone for christmas. I wanna put a chatting client and some apps on it. I dont wanna brick it so im kinda not sure if i should do this. What are the risks? and if there is there any way to protect myself?

IMO if you can follow directions and are not a retard the risk is close to zero. This is a very forgiving platform follow the directions and read up on the hacking forums and you will be fine.

Start with whatever firmware version you have, find a guide and enjoy.
