Hi there,

Sometimes I am reading a topic such as this one. The last post is from 22 July 2024, while we're now at 16 October 2024. If I did my math correctly, it has been 116 days since the last post.

What are the exact rules regarding topic bumping? The forum rules say the following about it:
Bumps. Posts that bring a thread to the top of the New Posts list but add no content to the thread (bumps) are not permitted. This applies not only to posts that say "bump" but to those with the intent to bump, e.g. posts saying "anyone?" or the equivalent. See why and how to avoid bumping.
There is a linked post in the forum rules but it doesn't explain it directly either.

I don't want to 'bump' a topic to ask a specific question about a program that people might use cause of the main subject and get in trouble.

Hopefully someone can answer the rules around this.

Since every post brings a thread to the top of the New Posts list, the exact rule simplifies down to:
Posts that ... add no content to the thread (bumps) are not permitted.

I believe the spirit of the rule is to prohibit "Bump" "Anyone?" "Update?" and similar demands for people rely to a previous post or question. If the only purpose of a post is just to bring a thread back onto page 1 then that post isn't allowed.

As long as your post adds something new and doesn't violate any of the other forum rules it is good to post. New unique questions, new information, new context, etc.

Creating an a new thread vs using a relevant thread 116 day old is more of thread necromancy issue, but MacRumors doesn't have any rules on thread necromancy. People may look at you funny for trying to answer/comment on a 90+ day old post, but as mentioned posts providing new information or asking new questions are OK.

@padams35 summed it up nicely for you. As long as your post in that Bartender thread is on-topic and a legit question about the topic, there is nothing wrong with posting in that thread.
