I haven't played any games via MAME in a long time. I was having a look around and there appears to be more options, such as LaunchBox, RetroArch etc. In the past, I used SDLMAME and I'm wondering if this is still the best one to use? I last used MAME around 2019, so a long time ago!

I used to have hundreds of ROMs for MAME. I got them from a friend. It was awesome. Then one day, most of the ROMs wouldn't play. The friend explained that when the version of MAME is updated, sometimes the ROMs need to be updated too. What a pain in the ass. I gave up on MAME after that.

I bought a Geekom Mini pc during Xmas season last year. Then I installed Linux mint and EmulationStation DE on it (ES-DE switches to RetroArch for all systems up to ps1/dreamcast). For arcade games I use the fbneo core in RetroArch. It took a while to set up everything (damn Linux, damn those different vintage refresh rates!) and curate libraries but it’s pretty much set and forget atm. MAME always seemed a bit picky/more difficult.

Thanks. I was having a look at some RetroArch setup videos and it looks kinda difficult! I think I will have to set aside some time to get it working.
