And that brings a prompt, a reminder, to listen to one of the greatest albums of the modern era, timelss and simply awesome, The Buena Vista Social Club.

In another life, a pre-Covid life, I even had the privilege of hearing them play, live......during a European tour around 20 years ago.

Buena Vista Social Group is fantastic. It's such original Cuban music coming from the everyday lives of people enjoying themselves there. I can almost imagine those cigar smoke filled lounges in Havana where those melodies and rhythms eminated. Seeing them live must have been great.

They were the best thing ever to come out of the Eurovision Song Contest.
Actually, yes, they were.

Timeless classics.

I never tire of listening to this album, or that group.

And yes, they were brilliant live.
I don't know a single person who (truthfully) hates ABBA - their music is too great, gets everyone singing along to it.
Did she have any favourites?

She had always loved ABBA, (and I bought her a CD of their greatest hits - ABBA Gold - around 15 years ago, which she treasured).

The thing was - for some weird reason - once she succumbered to dementia, and the condition became more pronounced, she adored ABBA, and could (and did) listen to them endlessly; we had that CD playing almost on a loop for several years, for, as we (and the wonderful Filipina carer who lived with us and cared for her for six years), discovered, anytime we put ABBA on, and pressed "play", her mood just improved, good moods turned into pure joy (her hands moving enthusiastically in time to the music), while grumpy moods were transformed into reluctant grins, and she simply relaxed.

While I love the music of certain groups, I am profoundly grateful to ABBA for the pure pleasure they gave my mother for the last decade or so of her life.

Animals. Released 44 years ago today.
You can relive the concert experience only on YouTube. You'll get to hear a proper finale on Pigs (Three Different Ones) by Gilmour and then Wright, which is something you do not get from the studio album which just sort of fades out. I heard that the band never released an official live album from the Animals tour because all the recordings were damaged. A tragedy. I believe that all that remains can be found on YouTube playing in various different venues. I wish I was there....

When Pink Floyd meets classical music you get "Is There Anybody Out There?"

Interestingly, David Gilmour, guitarist extraordinaire, is not playing the classical guitar on this song -- a fact which surprised me given his legendary abilities to play powerful instrumental music with the guitar. According to WIKI, "Gilmour has said that he tried to perform it, and was not satisfied with the final result ("I could play it with a leather pick but couldn't play it properly finger style"). Evidently, he wanted to get a "lighter sound." So, session musician Joe DiBlasi was brought in to play it. Roger Waters wrongly credited the work to "Ron DiBlasi" on the album sleeve because he could only remember that the musician's name had three letters and Ron was the closest name he could remember.
