Listening to new video live release from Ashley McBryde. She and Eric Church are the best thing outta Nashville in a few years! I haven't heard anything from her (or Eric) that didn't just blow me away. Complete albums that are filled with listenable music!

Chick Corea passed away a few days ago. Now, I'm not saying I was his biggest fan, but I certainly do recognize not only his vast, vast talent as a musician and composer, but also his place in the pantheon of Jazz Greats.

What I remember most about him, is how when back when I started playing guitar some 20+ years ago I had a teacher that was a total jazz nut. That's not to say the guy couldn't play pretty much any genre ever invented, but jazz was his main thing. On a lesson once he gave me the tabs for a song I'd never heard of, "Spain" by some dude named Chick Corea, and told me to start chipping away at it. I was pretty peeved since I'd much rather spend my days playing Metallica and such over and over again. Turns out, even though it took me ages to get the hang of the song, he was right in trying to broaden my horizons as a musician. And, although guitar versions exist, the damn song doesn't even originally really have a guitar part.

RIP Mr. Corea.

A wonderful post & song recommendation.

I was very very lucky to have seen Chick Corea live once in San Diego in 2015...that too in a joint concert with Herbie Hancock! It was an utterly mindbending evening of dissonant, atonal compositions, mixed with explosive jazzy improvisations as Corea & Hancock traded blows like I'd never seen anyone do before.

At times I really couldn't even believe what I was hearing. It was as close to a transcendent experience as I've ever gotten.

Rest in Peace to a true master. Thanks Chick for giving me one of the most memorable nights of my life ❤️

It really was. And yes the price was a nice bonus 😄

The entire concert was facilitated and sponsored by the La Jolla Music Society so the tickets were thankfully well subsidized!
