I'm always surprised when I look over a fellow Mac user's shoulder at what apps sit open at any given time, so I thought I'd look for a cross-section of what apps happen to be open at this very moment. I'll start off:

Adium
iCal
Address Book
Mail
Synergy Advance
Camino
iTunes
Preview
TextEdit
Terminal (running F@H)
Dashboard
Quicksilver
DragThing
Konfabulator
Cee Pee You
SideNote
Edit: Oh yeah, and Finder. :p

What apps do you have open?

From left to right (in my Dock non-running apps skipped)

Finder
Dashboard
iSync
Address Book
iCal
iPhoto
iTunes
Mail
Safari (using latest CVS webkit)
XCode
Terminal
Activity Monitor
QuickTime
Plist Editor

I just had to respond to this post since by coincidence I had a mess of random software open as a result of working on a relief map and a web project simultaneously:

Finder
Activity Monitor
Terminal
Mail
Safari
Camino
TextWrangler
TextEdit
Preview
QuickTime Player
BorkPad
Graphic Converter
Interarchy
Bryce
iPhoto
Azureus (Java)
JUMP (Java - GIS program)
Photoshop 5.5 (Classic)
MacDEM (Classic - GIS program)

...plus Stuffit Expander popping up every once in a while to decompress something.

It's good to have a couple gigs of RAM (though when opening 500 megapixel satelite images, that doesn't seem like nearly enough).

Finder
Dashboard
Backstage Pilot
Backstage Monitor
Mail
Safari
Newsfire
iTunes
Delicious Library
Filemaker Pro
Acrobat Pro
InDesign
Illustrator
Folding@Home
Chicken of the VNC

Finder
Dashboard
Safari
Adium
Mail
Address Book
iCal
iTunes
iPhoto
TextEdit
Script Editor
Terminal
SETI@home
Photoshop CS2

I need more ram. 512 isn't enough.

I am planning on getting a 12" PB w/512MB. The price to go to 768MB is $68 from Apple and $63 from Crucial. Do you guys think that going to 768 MB is noticable? I will be doing regular stuff on the PB.

Wow, some of you guys are running alot!

I'm simple right now, not doing much.

Finder
Firefox
Entourage
iTunes

The thing with OS X is that you can leave apps running without much (any?) performance loss. I'm not using half the apps I have open.

Finder, Mail, Safari, MSN, iChat, Skype, Download Wizard, iTunes, QuickTime, RealPlayer, TextEdit, Terminal, Preview.

Finder
Dashboard
Mail
Safari
iChat
Address Book
Adium X
iTunes
Cyberduck
NVU
Netscape Composer
Textedit
Photoshop CS
Imageready CS
Word 2004

All with actual windows open. I usually just have Finder, Dashboard, Mail, Safari, and iChat open, but I'm working on a website.

Finder
Eudora
Safari
Word
Excel
Acrobat
Palm Desktop
iTunes
IE

Finder
Mail
Safari
iTunes
PhotoShop
Illustrator
Final Cut Pro
MSN
Skype

Those apps I generally leave open all the time, I just happen to be using nearly all of them at the moment. ;)
