Although it's more soundtrack than mere sound, the high pitch wailing/screeching from 2001: A Space Odyssey.

It wasn't the Nostromo, was it?
Wow, lotsa good guesses...but all off the mark.
It was, first and foremost, the launching/landing sound of the Jupiter 2 on Lost in Space. (The little whine you hear at the end is the landing struts being deployed.)
Later, 20th Century-Fox liked the sound so much it became the sound of The Time Tunnel when they ramped it up to send someone backwards or forward in time.
I also heard it used once on the TV series Batman as the sound of the atomic reactor in the Bat Cave.
And it was in at least one very well-known movie. If you watch the open of the original Planet of the Apes, when Taylor's ship crashes into the ocean, you'll hear this same sound.
I've always thought it was very cool because it really conveys a feeling of power.

The beam technology sound in the Asgard ships and then later on in the Wraith ships in the Stargate shows.
My favorite sound was from that old British series, U.F.O. I always loved the way alien ship sounded.
