updated every two years from the 4, to the 5, and then to the 6. i was all set to go three years until next upgrade but due to some problems with the 6 (not its speed), i reluctantly upgraded to the 7 which thought offered no real upgrade (although as i turns out, i liked the OIS for the camera).

this year, my 7 was doing just fine (esp after the iOS 12 update made it seem potentially faster than it was under ios10!) but i really wanted to do some "consumer therapy" and wanted the dual cameras and larger screen, so i went with the XS. (and handed my 7 down to my wife)

unless some earth shattering technology comes out in the next two years, i fully expect to keep the XS 3-4 years. as much as 5G will be nice (supposedly coming in 2 years), i don't think that will be a reason for me to upgrade.

cell phone technology has matured. a 6S/SE performs very well under ios12. even the 6 works fine although i think its performance is more shaped by the 1gb of RAM than the processor speed.

I’ll do what I’ve done for my past two upgrades now, and upgrade every 2 years to a device from the previous year.

I can’t justify Apples new higher prices and like to take advantage of the price decreases on the previous years phone. Performance upgrades are minimal and nobody seems to care whether you’ve got a new phone or not these days. I’d rather spend £700 and upgrade my Apple Watch more often.

My iPhone is going to be kept on an older OS forever. It's never getting updated. That being the case, there's no reason to get a new iPhone until this one tanks or I drop it and it breaks. I could conceivably have this phone for another 5 years or longer...If it lasts that long.

But if 5G becomes ubiquitous and the iPhones can use it without being a buggy mess, then I'll probably make the jump (to a $2000 iphone.. Aggg)

Why don’t you want too upgrade too a newer iOS I have not have any issue with IOS 12 or any past updates on my iPhone 8 Plus

If you are never upgrading the OS just make sure you never use online banking apps, email or anything containing personal information that you don’t want leaked. Security is a constant battle for the likes of Apple and other OEM’s and not upgrading does leave your data wide open.

I’m due for an upgrade next month per IUP but, truthfully I’m on the fence about getting rid of my X for an Xs.

Sounds like it'd be a pointless upgrade for your needs. It is for most people as the X under IOS12 is an 'as new' device. Apple seems to have hit the sweet spot between hardware/software/UI with the X, to make the whole thing fluid & intuitive. The XS is great for those with older phones, but X owners who are already happy with its camera &/or aren't into photography should hold onto their great device.

My iPhone is going to be kept on an older OS forever. It's never getting updated.

Which device is this? Chances are, by not updating software, it'll hold it back - IOS12 made most supported devices quicker, even newer devices like the 2017 models.

Depends if I like the future iphone. Had iphone 8 and didn’t upgrade til the Xs came out.

Depends on when the next iPhone outside redesign comes out. That’s why I went from 6+ to X and skipped everything else. Knowing Apple, it might be for another few years.

My X is serving me just fine. While I do love new tech, it really depends on what Apple is talking about next year as to whether or not I will carry on with it another year. I really can't imagine much happening with phones these days that will make them heads and shoulders better than they are.

Given the XR starts at $1,030 here in Canada, I’m going to hold onto my SE for at least another year - maybe longer.

It still performs really well and I have no issues with the performance of any of the apps I use.

Over the past four years, I believe the changes in mobile technology have been incremental. I just can’t justify buying a new device when the one I currently own works without a hitch.

This been said, I have booked an appointment to get my battery replaced for $35 CAD. And I all of who qualify for the discounted battery price to do the same by the end of the year.

I suspect my Max will meet my expectations for the next two years perfectly. The only reason I would upgrade again next year, is if I found something they completely ‘Wowed’ me, but given that smart phones can only input so much technology currently, I don’t know though that would be a possibility.

With Apple's back-to-back years of bumping up pricing for their iPhones, will you continue to upgrade every year, or reassess & hold onto your iPhone for longer?

I don't care what allegiance you hold, they're only material devices that happen to be the most used of any generation, but when it comes to corporations taking their consumer base for granted, as I feel Apple have for the past 2 years, I feel we now have the upper hand (& numbers) in determining how they gauge us in future.

Will you continue to encourage Apple's dominance via exorbitant price hikes, or will you be a part of a generation that, at bare minimum, slaps a plateau on their ridiculous profit-making campaign that they appear to be hellbent on executing since the iPhone X?

Don't get me wrong, I love their products, but feel we need to discourage their blatent gauging & not continually becoming apart of their quarterly profit estimates.

Never, finito, terminar. Feels like wasted too money on these things. Even thought of buying a new iPhone make me nauseous. iPhone max is best and I want to keep it for long time. After that consumer cellular, you know that $20 flip phone with $25 unlimited service which old people uses, that one.

I’ll probably pick up another 7+ or 7 to replace my in hand 7+ when the battery gets too wonky next year, unless Apple can do a battery swap while I am waiting.

Do not need or want an X model, glass backed iPhone, or Apple’s price hikes. I was annoyed enough when I paid $1K for this 7+ 20 months ago, so now that the price much lower and this model does way more than I need, I’ll stick with it as long as I can.

Currently get my devices through a promotional setup. The last device I paid money for however was the iPhone X because I wanted one to keep as heritage device. I don't anticipate supporting Apple's structure otherwise

Looking to see what there is in 2021. Hopefully my launch day 6 plus lasts that long

I planned to upgrade this year, but I refuse to pay £1000+.

So unless I see a deal/discount, I'll stick with my 7.
I could have got £100 off, but even thats not tempting...

I love my Max, but am interested to see where Apple takes the form factor next. The notch will presumably get smaller until it disappears entirely. Somehow.

And they'll switch to USB-C at some point. Maybe.

I could see them making the side edges more like the new iPad Pros too. Perhaps.

I'm so committal lol. But my next phone will have to be meaningfully different (to me) to upgrade.

I buy all my phones outright and ticked the 2 year option. But I've never held on to a phone for 2 years before. However, the A12 Bionic seems pretty bullet proof. I've resolved, though, to never get another android.

I usually upgraded every year since 2011, but this year I didn’t upgrade my launch day X, reason being I finally found out with the promotion I have from last year, I will lose out on the $150 remaining in promo credits if I paid off the remaining $214 left for my device payments. I was back and forth on upgrading this year and was getting ready to upgrade yesterday, when I was informed of that information from a rep. So until next year in September, I’ll keep my X and upgrade to whatever X Max launch and keep my X since it’s the 10 year anniversary iPhone. After that I’ll probably upgrade every 2 years, unless iPhone prices increase again in 2020, where I’ll just keep next year’s upgrade for as long as possible.

I think that I’m confused. At least over the past year, it looks to me like prices have not increased. Here are examples.

The iPhone XS is the same price as the X.
The iPhone XS Max is the same +$100 increment over the smaller phone
The iPhone XR is cheaper

There are some higher storage tiers but those are in no way compulsory. Is the X/XS/XS Max more expensive than the 8? Sure but they’re next gen phones with next gen features, and if they’re too expensive you can still buy the 8/8+ right?

Well Apple still sells the 7 so anything newer isn't obsolete. I do find that their phones have gotten more expensive though. My XS Max was £1249 because I went for the 256GB option.

At least Apple is now offering ample storage options on their devices. I can remember iPod Classic owners rueing their failing hard drive devices and complaining that no phone could hold all their music.

I kept my 6 plus for 4 1/2 years almost.

I’ll keep my Xr the same amount of time probably.

I kept my 6 for 4 years and it still worked great and I got $150 for it and was probably worth a little more.

Another factor that never appears in these kinds of threads is the resale value which is quite high for the new phones. Unless you’re binning your old phone, your paying the difference, not the new price every upgrade.

As a sidecar to my above post, the original 8GB iPhone sold for $600 in 2007. That’t ~$943 in todays dollars and a new iPhone X 64 GB is $56 more. $5/y over 11 years does not sound like a huge price increase to me.

I think we're paying more for the storage nowadays. An 4 or 8GB iPhone must have seemed a huge amount of memory back in 2007/8. I can remember toting the Nokia N95 8GB back in the day and the memory felt gigantic..but apps were so much smaller and people weren't really storing video let alone movies or TV shows on their devices back then.
