It's not so much that I must have a Mac, it's that I WILL NO LONGER USE WINDOWS.

This.

Personally, I got totally sick and tired of "patch Tuesday". The last time I loaded 25+ patches only to be followed a week later by about a dozen "optional" patches. "Tileworld" finally put me over the edge.

I too am an IT professional and when I get home at night I want something that simply works. Mac's and OSX do that for me. Not to mention the solid as a rock Unix underpinnings of OSX.

I too am an IT professional, used to do Help Desk for 5yrs 10yrs ago and you be surprised at how many people use computers on the daily but still haven't learned proper computer etiquette. Everything is all imaged so reinstalling computers wasn't hard at all.

I don't have to have a Mac, I just prefer to...

I'm in the field since 1989, and I'm a Mac user since then. In my home I'm proud to be "Windows free" since 2005.
I'm not a Microsoft hater. I have an Xbox One, after a Xbox 360 after an original Xbox (not so popular in Europe). I own a Lumia phone as my work's phone.
But when I'm speaking about my life, it's Apple.

PS: yes, I'm a Google's hater, as you can see in my avatar, but I have good reasons to.

UNIX based OS.
Top notch VM software (great for Linux Distros).
Great battery life, amazing screen, great design.
A lot of software development tools.
iOS development.
UI is more intuitive for pro users (Windows 8.1/10 isn't as nice) e.g. touchpad etc.

For me, by the far the biggest reason to have a Mac is OS X. It is so far and away better than Windows in just about every way possible. I use El Capitan at home and also Windows 10 for when I need to do work. Windows 10's UI is such a jumbled mess and so many things just don't work. OS X is beautiful, fast, consistent, and easy to use.

I would have to say I don't 'HAVE' to have a Mac. I choose to have one. I like MacBooks (Air and Pro) because of the aluminum construction, light weight and quiet operation. I like Mac OS X a lot. So much more intuitive than Windows. I used Windows since 3.1 and I like Windows, but I prefer OS X. I'm of the generation of "I built them, played with them, modified them, now I just want them to work". Thus, I prefer MacBooks and OS X. Finally I like Logic Pro and I use that as my recording studio software. I used Sonar for years and I liked that program as well, but I prefer Logic.

So it's more of a preference, than a NEED. I can choose to use a Mac and I do. In my 30 years of computing experience, I choose to own a Mac and use OS X.

1) the aluminum uni-body construction .. (which helps to dissipate heat and makes the machine very sturdy) ..

2) the speed .. no viruses/trojans ..

3) really neat software ..

4) and, finally, the most important: .. the operating system!

OS X advantages:
  • Quicksilver
  • QUICKSILVER
  • Constant/consistent top bar for every program
  • Keyboard shortcuts are sane and reachable
  • Hot Corners/Mission Control (or whatever you want to call it)
  • Dock is a convenient drag-and-drop area
  • 1st-party apps included are sensible and helpful
  • 3rd-party apps are generally of higher quality
  • Disk Utility is the best disk management tool I've used yet (and included)
  • I prefer the top-right applications in the menu bar to Window's Task Manager.
  • System Preferences is better laid out than Control Panel
  • Terminal is easier to use (or at least was before Windows 10)
  • More stable (generally, but not exclusively)
  • The "alt" key doesn't toss me into the hidden menus as Windows does (infuriating when using zoom in Adobe Illustrator)
  • Seriously guys, Quicksilver.

Windows Advantages:
  • Able to do more due to larger app availability
  • Cut and Paste! (Although available on Mac through Xtra Finder
  • OneNote and OneDrive are pretty awesome
  • Generally, hardware is serviceable and upgradable (unless you're buying a Macbook-like "ultrabook")
  • Networking is leagues better
  • New Windows 10 "Task view" is better than Mission Control
  • Window snapping
  • Maximizing a window makes more sense
There's other stuff, like availability of games on Windows vs OS X, but that's not really a priority to me.
