Better fit for talking when holding the phone with your shoulder. (no hands)

Can't think of anything else useful for changing only one dimension.

why is everyone making it seem like even if they do make it wider, thats its going to be like another inch wider. it prob would only be a few centimeters. im sure all of you with small hands will be able to handle that

Okay… And this "longer "iPhone will only be 1 cm taller. So, what's the problem with that?

Based upon the measurements, the new iPhone should be svelte in the hand

this screen form looks hideous to me. No doubt it will be well designed but I can not buy such a stretched screen.
Also why always going for thinner ?? We need more battery, so bigger phone is not such a big deal to that extend

That is funny!
It reminds me these big anesthetic DECT phones we used to use more than 10 years ago :D

I'd be willing to bet you have to shift your grip to reach that extra inch though. for me, with big hands, I can reach all points on the front of the iPhone without shifting my grip. Make it wider and I can no longer do that.

Absolutely not. I can easily reach beyond the left edge of my iPhone 4 with my right thumb. In your case, if you have big hands then this is even easier.

----------

Your hands are not small. I can barely reach across the screen with my thumb in one-handed use.

If I had to go with a bigger iphone, I would definitely want for a longer screen. A wider screen makes it damn near unusable for my small hands.

Considering some of these renderings look like the artist was on crack, I wouldn't put much credence in the rumors. I am, however, keeping an open mind about the designs just in case they are legit.

My hands are borderline small, as I said before. If I had an extra camera of some sort, I'd make a quick video showing you how easy it is for me to reach beyond the left edge of my iPhone 4 with my right hand only.

With a flat backing, it will be awkward in your hand, regardless of size. Hence why most phones have a curved backing. Makes it much more comfortable to hold. I remember the good ole' days of the 3G curved hard plastic backing.

Its about cost, not usability.

I think that a longer screen allows Apple to keep using their existing manufacturing lines to produce the iPhone 5. All they have to do is make a small adjustment as to where to cut one display (and grid and touch sensor) and start the next one.

An entirely new screen (different width and length) would require retooling the lines or finding an alternate source for the screens, which would cut more deeply into their profits.

Android manufacturers are not in the same situation because they already churn out smaller numbers of devices at a larger variety of sizes... it should less of an overall 'loss' for their business model.

1 cm? no, its going to be half an inch bigger if its to be made longer from 3.5 inches to 4

Most of the sources have said 7-10 mm taller. 10 mm = 1 cm. They're gonna shorten the space between the earphone and the top of the screen and between the home button and the bottom of the screen and the home button and the bottom of the phone (thanks to the 19 pin connector).

I have very little interest in an elongated screen, for I hate holding the iPhone in landscape, and the font size is the important thing for me. Thus, I would prefer greater width and height.

I certainly hope the additional real estate on the elongated screen is not used for widgets....

Those "few centimeters" would make a big difference. Consider this mockup from last year.

while that may be so, if those renderings are anything to go by, and im hoping their not, that phone is clearly about half an inch bigger than the current phone

Yeah, I wouldn't put much stock in these renderings. Generally, the renderings of the new iPhone really sucks compared to how it really looks.

Thanks for all the comments regarding my original question. No one has put forward a convincing case on how this will provide any real advantage to users. I might start using the phone in landscape if the height was bigger but no extra width defeats this.

I've been with iPhone since the 3G but I'm finding it increasing difficult to convince myself to stay with iPhone and let's face it, the elongation of the screen is most likely to happen. That, together with the increasingly boring UI is slowly turning me to a Windows 8 phone. Can't believe it tbh. I could never go to Android, the UI is so hideous.

It stops competitors from being able to make fun of Apple for not having a four-inch screen. It gives Apple the ability to say we have a 4 inch screen.

Not really cause next year, damn near all of the lastest Androids will have 5 inch or above screens. GS4, Note 2 and whatever HTC comes out with will all be at least 5 inches.

Metro is pretty sweet on Windows Phone. But that about it.

Yes but I don't think the average consumer will like 5 inch phones enough for them to stay around.

Somebody give this man a dollar. With no more benefit than you'll get from this take on a 4" screen, that probably has a helluva lot to do with it.

While possible I find it unlikely. Apple would not be that stupid (I hope). With these large android phones there isn't a huge need to reach the upper left corner of the screen, so I can still use them one handed very easily. If I'm looking at the web then I'm usually using two hands anyway even on my 4S.

However with iOS the back/cancel button is usually at the upper left and even with the small 3.5" screen its a stretch to reach and with a case requires an adjustment to my hand. I have to use a case because the phone is so fragile. If the screen was taller it would be impossible for me too use it with one hand. Which is silly I can use a 4.5" android but not a 4" iPhone...

Actually thinking about it, there isn't much they can do with any larger screen without redesigning the OS/apps to change the back/cancel placement..

I'm confused, he is saying its going to be 1 cm bigger and you are saying no, its going to be about a 1/2 inch bigger...

1 cm = .4 inch

Isn't that "about" a half inch? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. Lol

People will complain about it, and they will get over it, like with all technological problems.

I have never understood this, so often repeated around here. How small are people's hands, anyway? If I put a phone in my palm, my fingers wrap completely around the front and touch thumb to finger. All my hand touches when using the phone is the edge. That is why I like the 4/4s wide edge compared to the thinner and thinner other smartphones, including the earlier iPhones. The back of my phone could have 1cm knives sticking out and it wouldn't matter for talking on the phone. (wouldn't be great in my pocket, though)

Take it easy on these folks. Steve Jobs told them that 3.5" is all they'll ever need and they're just trying to rationalize that in a world where every other decent smart phone on the planet is over 4".

Count me in the group that don't like it. I want a bigger screen but in the same ration we have now. Only thing I can think of is that it either makes it easier to increase the screen size and keep apps compatible with the older smaller screen size phones or it's cheaper to produce. Hopefully the rumors are wrong.
