    Hello all,
I'm starting up an alternative online newspaper at school and need to figure out what blog software we'll be using.

    What I'm looking for:
    • Single page with the first paragraph of all recent entries with links to view pages with full versions of all articles.
    • A robust commenting system that doesn't require the need for any new windows to opened to read or post comments
    • The ability to have multiple (10-25) authors, each with a different login and default "signature"
    • A setting that keeps posts from being published until being approved by an admin
    • A bit of room for visual customization
    • Relatively easy to use for both authors and readers
    • As low in cost as possible

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks in advance,
    wmmk

I think this would be easily done in wordpress. Wordpress is free and all you need is a simple hosting setup and domain name.

"Single page with the first paragraph of all recent entries with links to view pages with full versions of all articles."
This can be done on the first page with page excerpts that link to a full page

"A robust commenting system that doesn't require the need for any new windows to opened to read or post comments"
All post can be commented on, you can set it up so they have to register and you can monitor every comment before it goes live.

"The ability to have multiple (10-25) authors, each with a different login and default "signature""
You can assign as many users as you like with different levels of accessibility.

"A bit of room for visual customization" Tons of free and premium templates that can be customized, or you can build one from scratch. There are alot of grid or magazine style ones that can be purchased relatively cheap and are pretty amazing.

Wordpress also has pages and pages of plugins and widgets that can enhance your site. check out www.bestwpthemes.com for some really great themes. do a little googling and you can find tons of resources, tutorials, themes, plugins for wordpress. Feel free to email me if you have any questions

Look into Joomla too. Might be more robust as a news site then the WPress.

expression engine for sure. as long as it's a non-profit organization it's free. it's incredibly easy and once you read a few of the EE tuts from boyink interactive, you'll be up and running in no time

Wordpress would do exactly what you need, It allows you to have multiple writers. It has great, plugins and themes. And its free.

I just don't like the (lack of) support at the Joomla forums...whether a question about how to do something or a bug, there just isn't much response over there. I can't say that I use the Wordpress forums enough to know about support, but it is so widely used that if I have a problem or need to know how to do something, I just google it and find what I need. Expression Engine looks really awesome, but Wordpress is free and that's always a plus...and with all the CMS/News themes out there, you could probably find something to do just what you want with little or no modifications.
