For me comparing firefox with safari is like comparing Word with pages or numbers with excel.

If you do basic stuff Safari would fit your needs as pages and numbers would. If you go little bit further do extra stuff then you need to use firefox.

Firefox has endless possibilities with its extensions. Just mouse gestures + delicious toolbar is enough for me.

I dont care about acid test or the milisecond difference btw rendering javascipt because i dont browse the net with a stopwatch in my hand .

Safari 4 beta was truly enjoyable, but it's Webkit caused some of my other programs (incl. Messenger) to function poorly.

So back to Firefox 3 and Adblock :)

I'm using Safari 4 Beta on all of my computers and find it quite enjoyable. I've also used Firefox quite a bit but I've found that I much prefer Safari.

Firefox user here. First browser I used when I came over to the Mac side. Tried safari but I didn't like it as much as Firefox. Had nothing to do with speed etc. I just didn't like it.

I have also tried chrome....... I am still up in the air about if I like it or not.

Anybody who thinks that Wikipedia is not a reliable source of information needs to wake up and introduce them self to the 21st century.

I just started using Camino, I like the gecko rendering, but Firefox is too slow to load and generally slow to respond.

'Anybody' is singular. Therefore, use of the the phrase "Introduce them self" is a grammatical error since one would then use the singular expression his or her self. Just sayin'. :D

When you have nothing else to say, argue semantics. You are correct though, I was just being lazy and did not figure it would matter in this context.

Yeah I'm not trying to start a fight, I just thought I'd neuter your argument by providing a smooth, completely unrelated verbal parry...

Firefox doesn't pass many web standard. you call that a opinion? either it does, or it doesn't, item by item, firefox probably past as much as webkit. If standard is such a high priority, everybody go use opera, which past 50% more standard than both webkit and gecko.

On that note, I do enjoy using Firefox, but I don't really need much in a web browser. The reason why I use Safari is because it opens much faster the first time you open it after a restart, and every time after that, and my firefox was being all buggy and weird with youtube content. It turned out that the erratic youtube behavior was because of a bad plugin, which is firefox's greatest strength and obviously it's greatest weakness.

After watching a number of threads devolve into pissing contests, I'm going to take my chances and jump in where angels fear to tread.

Is it absolutely necessary for everyone to get so "territorial" about such an idiotically unimportant issue as what browser a person uses??? The original poster just wanted a poll of how many people use what. And yet within just a few posts Clevin and SnowLeopard2008 had already gotten into, as someone else so eloquently put it, a hissy fit!

Seriously??? Are people so bored that they no longer have any tolerance of another person's opinion? Are we all still in first grade?

I remember a time when coming to forums like these was fun and informative.....

To answer the original poster, I used to use Firefox exclusively. But I got tired of it not conforming to OS X usability standards as well as other browsers. Not using the Keychain, somewhat choppy scrolling behavior, fonts that don't look quite right, etc. Its definitely a good browser, and for some the plugins may make it a necessity. For me though, I'm currently switching between Safari, iCab (which now uses WebKit and is amazingly fast and configurable), and Camino (more compliant interface and integration with OS X while still using Gecko). Haven't decided which of the 3 I like better.

Criticise a Mac product and expect to get your head bitten off by one of the legions of fanboys.

I remember one thread when a guy was complaining of the hardware problems he was having with his Mac. After making his point the general gist of the responses was "Why don't you get a PC? LOL", "Viruses" e.t.c

I bought my Mac simply because I needed a new computer and wanted to try a new OS. What I have come to learn is that there is a vocal minority of elitist idiots on this board who look down on the proles, and their inability to spend $1,500 on a new computer.

Yes, i'm in an immature mood today. But your Safari-lovin' isn't helping...

*Edit (Just to go on topic)*

Both browsers certainly have their plus points, but for me Firefox wins it for the Add-ons and being supported on every website out there (among other things). Plus Mozilla are damn quick at releasing security patches while Apple take what seems to be forever

I recall Clevin mentioned the "Firefox 3.5 beta" and I mentioned the "Firefox 3.5 beta". Please re-read my post and Clevin's. I believe Clevin changed his post to read Firefox 3.1 beta 3 after I posted my counter-argument post to mislead people.

I'm not participating in a "hissy-fit" as others claim this is, but having people edit their posts after I counter-debate them is unacceptable.

I know the Acid3 test doesn't prove one browser is better over another. I compromised while Clevin pushed more of his lies. I agreed his themes looked cool amongst other subjective opinions he stated. He just kept pushing his opinion, but most of it were facts.

Having read both of your posts, and used both browsers in question, the simple fact is that you're both right. There are some things that FF is faster at. But right now, WebKit is also making some serious gains in speed. Even independent testing is showing that Safari is faster in most areas than FF.

Here's a link to a CNet article concluding that, for the time being, Safari 4 is the faster browser on the planet:
http://crave.cnet.co.uk/software/0,39029471,49301219,00.htm

Will it stay that way? Probably not. FF is implementing its own JS engine that should close the gap. But for now, as you like to say, the facts are the facts.

That is what I was aiming for, but due to people editing their posts after I debated them, it was lost amongst a big ocean of opinions.

The Acid3 test does the exact opposite of what it was meant to do. Safari and Opera aren't any more standard compliant than Firefox. The two companies simply made the browser pass the test, standards were an after thought, these browsers are optimized to pass the tests. The Firefox team seems to be the only one that is just working on improving the browser rather than street appeal stats. Safari, with each release gets more and more bloated, one of Safari's best features was how light it was. Firefox is improving in its weak areas, OS X integration and appearance. The Safari team seems to not care much about what Safari lacks, good plug in support and security.

While I wouldn't expect anyone who doesn't follow Mozilla to remotely know this, Firefox 3.1 & 3.5 are the same thing. They just moved from 3.1 beta to 3.5 beta as they decided they added in enough stuff during the beta process to bump the version up to 3.5 :)

i mostly use ff3 for web dev stuff and safari for everything else. But the new ff3.1 beta builds are really fast.
