I'm definitely getting the 27" iMac with the i7-3770 and GTX 680MX upgrades. I'll stick with the base memory configuration and add 16GB myself.

As far as hard drives, it depends on whether Apple winds up offering other SSD options -- if they offer a 256GB or 512GB option, I'll go with that and add a 2TB Thunderbolt drive. Otherwise, I'll get the 3TB Fusion drive.

I have a maxed-out 2011 iMac that I plan to sell to help fund the new one, so I won't have to cough up all that much money out of pocket to upgrade.

On MBP, 768GB costs $1000 to upgrade from 256GB, $1300 to upgrade from 128GB, so 768GB on its own would run about $1500 from Apple.

Oh my bad! So yeah its probably gonna cost much more then, because a 256 ssd is more expensive than a 1tb HDD. Though, could maybe drop a bit since the rmbp has been out 6 months so prices have gone down a bit on ssd since then.

ANyway, I have set a limit of 6.000$ to buy that iMac, I hope that will give me the maxed out iMAC 27".

Dont get your hopes up. Yes i7 has bigger cache but mostly, you are better off getting SSD for that quick swapping pricewise.
Hyperthreading has been around for 10 years and it still has mostly niche uses. Unless youre transcoding lots of video daily and the longer renders cost you money, I dont see a reason shelling out extra for i7. Get Fusiondrice instead, that is something that will be evident in day to day use, with i7, those extra "cores" will be idle for most of the time.
It is a marketing thing to get more money out of you, yes you get more power but unless you are very specific kind of user you wont be using it. Same goes for Xeon processors.
I5 is perfectly fine for HD video editing and gaming, if you are someone who earns money with the system, those extra 20 minutes ripping your DVD might be beneficial. Many video pro's invest rather in storage because most of the time, you leave rendering for night, then it doesnt matter.

PS I realize there are more uses for i7 than for video production, its just sth Im familiar with and decided to share my perspective. I feel like lots of you just want to boast with i7 iMac.

I use some social network analysis which will greatly benefit from hyper-threading.

I've added mismatched memory (2x2GB & 2x1GB = 6GB) before in a custom-built PC, will this be okay with the new iMac.

I am looking to buy a BTO with just an upgrade to the 680MX video card, and the base 8GB RAM. I want to buy 16GB (2x8GB) to bring the total to 24GB RAM.

Is this advised? or should I just buy two more 4GB sticks to equal 16GB?

Good question. I'd like to know the answer as well. I'm probably going to do the same thing. However, you might as well get another 8GB stick and make it 4x8GB for a nice 32GB total. And really, that much ram is going to be overkill for most people. I'm considering just getting one 8GB stick and staying with 16. My current iMac has 16gb and I never see any paging.

it's gonna cost $1.000, same as on the macbook pro, I'm pretty sure, nothing more at least. So if I could pay 2.000 for 1.5 tb of flash/ssd I would definately do it. Im gonna keep this machine for a couple of years at least. but I see the mac book pro 512gb of flash is half the price than of the 768, so I guess 1.5tb would become seriously expensive :D

You are definitely insane ... and I like it !

Yes, you'll be fine mixing sizes. It's best to used matched pairs, but even singles memory cards will work.

Pretty straight forward:

27" iMac
3.2ghz i5 or 3.4ghz i7 depending on cost difference ($200 or less, go i7)
8gb RAM
1tb or 3tb fusion drive depending on value.
GTX 680MX (the only must-have option)
Trackpad
Applecare.

Is the GTX 675M not that great then? I need one that's good for video editing.

27 inch
i7, but which will depend on the upgrade price
Standard RAM, but I will have 32GB on hand to install the day I receive it.
1GB Fusion drive that I can hopefully break into two drives and manage myself.
The graphics card option will also depend on what they charge for the upgrade.
Magic Trackpad instead of the mouse.
And days saved encoding videos on this instead of a macbook air.

I think CPU power, RAM, and drive speed will have a greater impact on video editing than GPU power, but someone correct me if I'm mistaken.
